As we step into mid summer, instagram and other social media welcomes us with posts of gardeners with their beautiful and bountiful gardens from other parts of the world. In UAE summers are quiet in the garden because of the heat. Not much can grow and not much we can do either. The heat is so intense that we can only enter the garden either very early in the morning or past the sunset, and that for a few short moments only. I keep looking at the garden through the window every day and reminisce the garden days of spring and winter. I imagine what I’ll be planting here and there, what I’d like to add and what to move. I often go through my collection of seeds and decide if I need to get more (you can’t ever have too much seeds, can you? 😍). So don’t let the heat stop you. Summer is the best time of the year to plan your garden, fantasize about the garden, prepare the compost and soil, and actually plant the garden. Yes, you can plant but indoors only at this time. In July, you can plant ahead some of the slow growing crops such as strawberries and brussel sprouts, herbs such as parsley and oregano, and flowers such as lavender and chamomile (I know, some consider these as herbs too). The picture guide is not a complete list, it’s just a guide that shows what you can plant now. You can plant other things too. Look at slow growing plants that require a long time to grow and that can stay as transplants for at least 8-10+ weeks. You don’t want to plant something now and not be able to plant it out when it’s time to transplant because it’ll still be too hot. Also you don’t want to start something indoors if you don’t have enough space.

The seeds were old so I wasn’t sure they’d germinate, but they did. I just love how funky kangkong seedlings look like. Did you know that it’s also known as water spinach? It’s a semi aquatic plant scientifically known as Ipomoea aquatica. Yup, if you can tell by the scientific name it’s related to morning glory flower vines. They’re not only in the same family but in the same genus. But did you know what else is in the same genus? Sweet potatoes. Isn’t plant science fascinating and fun??

It’s that time of the year when everything blooms. Spring 💕. I didn’t like spring as a kid much, my favorite seasons were summer and winter. I liked it more because that’s when we could play and be outdoors a lot (playing in the snow and ice skating in winter, and being outdoors, swimming in the river all summer long). But as I grew up I started to enjoy the beauty of all seasons, and started appreciating spring more and more.
When I see flowers bloom, buds, leaves, it all fills me with happiness and joy. I spend time in the garden and simply absorb the goodness nature has to offer. I feel at peace.

I call this a miracle tomato. It’s one of the few volunteer tomato plants I have this year. It’s special cuz it was neglected at first and it’s growing in just around 10cm of soil. Do you keep your volunteer plants or remove them?

You know you can grow green onions easily? I grew these from the small shallots called Indian Onion. You’ll find them in most supermarkets (they’re like the mini version of the red onion). They’re super happy in the shade in small pots (the ones you see are in a seedling trays). And they only need little soil and little sun (these get almost no sun), so anyone can grow them, even if you don’t have a garden.
