Glass brick install day at The Sunny ☀️
I’ve always loved glass bricks. There’s something nostalgic and timeless about them... I saw them a lot in Brazil, bringing soft light into homes while keeping privacy.
Beyond the aesthetics, they’re actually quite interesting thermally too. The sealed air cavity inside the blocks gives them better performance than standard glazing, while the textured glass diffuses sunlight and slows heat transfer compared to clear glazing, creating a gentler quality of light and warmth throughout the day.
For the building science nerds: some glass block systems can achieve Uw values around 3 W/m²K with SHGC (g-values) around 0.68 allowing useful winter solar gains when used intentionally for passive heat gain, while still bringing in plenty of daylight and diffusing glare. The blocks are also inherently airtight as individual sealed units, and when detailed correctly as an assembly they contribute to a well-sealed envelope, with most performance depending on the perimeter detailing and junctions.
Watching the install was fascinating as wel: slim framing brackets, EPS insulation wrapped around the opening, reinforced steel within the mortar joints… all the little details that help make these assemblies durable and perform well over time.
