We are thrilled to share that BSPN was awarded The Australian Institute of Architects Brisbane Regional Commendation in Education Architecture for our work on Somerville House’s Fewings Building! This project has now been shortlisted for the 2023 Queensland Awards.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this project to life.

Regional Jury’s Citation:

“The opening up of Somerville House's Fewings heritage building to its central green space transforms the building and its relationship to the site’s past and future.

The depth created through the building’s edge, with its sympathetic grounded-brickwork extension, creates opportunities for both visual connection and ventilation.

The constraints and challenges of construction in a heritage place and new building regulations have been negotiated without any over complication.

Recycled timber from the site is used in joinery, and the restrained palette and newfound space on the lower level complete a successful restoration of the building.”

Reinvigorating a Heritage-Listed Building Through Strategic Refurbishment.

BSPN has recently completed the ‘Co-operative Centre of Excellence’ (formerly Building A) with Federation University Australia at their SMB campus in Ballarat VIC.

This project provided BSPN with an opportunity to reveal parts of the building that had been hidden beneath a century of repurposing. The result is an example of a carefully considered approach that successfully leverages the tension between heritage preservation, innovative design, environmental performance, and user experience.

The SMB campus is included on the Victorian Heritage Register (H1463), with the Centre noted as being of primary importance. Initially constructed as administration, metallurgy and geology laboratories, and classrooms in 1899, the Centre has been repurposed many times, ultimately becoming the administrative centre for the University and home for property services in the late 1990s.

The resulting design leaves behind the uninspiring aesthetic of bland, white-walled rooms littered with cabling and corporate furniture and instead delivers a space that is enjoyable and stimulating, all the while fostering collaboration, a cornerstone of the Federation University strategy.

This project is a bold confirmation of the academic direction for the University within a heritage context, creating a modern, cooperative learning, teaching, and industry engagement hub reaffirming Ballarat as a regional centre for tertiary education.

Arana Leagues Club, a European Café Experience by BSPN.

BSPN recently completed an authentic European café experience within Arana Leagues Club, featuring themed design elements such as custom mosaic tiles, warm colour palettes, and street awnings. A stand-alone café with its own identity, it has become the heart of the club and a celebration of café culture exuding old-world charm.

As you approach the cafe, the shopfront glazing with a canvas awning and bespoke street lamps creates an ambience reminiscent of a European streetscape. Passers-by can catch glimpses of the activity within, where the cafe serves up fresh espresso, made-to-order sandwiches, and gelato that will transport you directly to the streets of Europe.

The interior design strikes a perfect balance between traditional and modern elements. Custom mosaic tiles in deep reds, touches of pink clay, and warm white tones, as well as wall and ceiling murals incorporating washed greens and a rich colour palette, come together to create an inviting atmosphere.

Booth seating featuring an olive tree planter and detailed upholstery, brass detailing to the bar fronts and feature plinths, and timber accents throughout the design palette, all contribute to the unique and inviting atmosphere of the European Café experience. A coffered ceiling mural serves as a striking focal point within the space, defining pedestrian paths.

The result is a visually stunning and inviting space that celebrates cafe culture and adds a new dimension to the club's offerings. It's no wonder the project has been well-received by the club and its patrons.

BSPN is proud to have been a part of this exciting new venue, demonstrating our dedication to creating one-of-a-kind and memorable experiences through innovative design.

BSPN has restored Fewings Building’s Queenslander vernacular, recapturing its former glory, while bringing it truly into the 21st century.

1/3 The restoration of the Fewings Building represents the exciting first stage of the Master Plan for Somerville House, a boarding and day school for girls located in South Brisbane. This project is an example of respectful conservation of the heritage aspects of the building while firmly bringing learning spaces into the 21st century.

Fewings Building forms an integral part of the school’s history, having opened in 1920 with a few classrooms, a gymnasium, and the Headmistress’s office. The original verandas that had previously been closed in were opened back up and extended, providing break-out zones that facilitate modern teaching practices and group learning whilst providing a greater visual connection to the ‘heritage heart’ of the campus and restoring the building’s vibrant Queensland vernacular. Enhanced traditional timber detailing of the verandas and new brick planters now provide students with outdoor wet weather options where previously there had been none.

2/3 A rite of passage, a place to connect, a space to call their own.
Fewings Building houses a lounge for the senior students and offices for the school’s Heads of Years 10, 11 and 12. The project team collaborated closely with staff and students to create a strong sense of ownership. With its own identity, the Senior’s Lounge has a sophisticated palette of earthly tones with accents of burgundy, creating a space perfect for relaxing, socialising, and studying. A personalised writable wall over a historical graphic encourages respect for the space and a connection to the school’s past.

Small nods to the building’s heritage have been made by installing new picture rails and ceiling mouldings and retaining the original timber flooring and existing staircase. Technology has been thoughtfully integrated into the flexible general learning areas, bringing them up to date, while preserving the character of the building. A simple, fresh white-on-white scheme is enhanced with pale eucalyptus accents, warm grey-coloured carpet, Tasmanian Oak trims and green-toned pinboards. Fewings Building brings elements of warmth and softness, a design attuned to the young students of Somerville House.
