Have you seen a butterfly warming itself up recently?

The butterflies found in Australia's southern regions are beginning to become active if they get an opportunity – particularly these three – as they may have been sleeping in sheltered spots deep in the undergrowth – or even around sheds and out-houses

Early spring may be cool or even freezing – but this time of year also has its advantages – with fewer predatory insects, migratory birds and lizards around. Temperatures below 15-20 degrees Celsius keep butterflies sluggish – particularly early in the morning – or when the day is cloudy. However, as soon as the sun's rays are enough to warm the ground these opportunistically 'early spring' butterflies venture out to find a warm spot – where they will spread out their wings, like solar panels, to soak up the sun's rays – which in turn will warms up their flight muscles – so that they can head off with a head start
