Pick the odd one out. We all know that make absolutely top quality kit so why would you not take the opportunity to use a bit more of the good gear or is it that you only value your life at $40?

Genuine cultural scar trees are very uncommon in coastal Qld. This old Forest Red Gum on the river bank in central Brisbane is the only scar tree that I believe was the real thing. Sadly the tree was lost during or soon after the 2011 flood.
The last image shows an another red gum which I assessed recently and is located in a documented First Nations camp near Brisbane. It is likely an almost fully occluded coolamon scar.

From the very bottom of photo vault - transplant 6 Ficus obliqua on a residential development west of Brisbane 36 years ago. Old school with lifting pins and dual crane lifts onto a 5 row module. Four of the trees are still in good health. One tree was lost in a storm and another was finished off by a local who preferred a treeless view.

A conversation with a Kiwi acquaintance at the 2025 ITCC in Christchurch turned to the 2019 Branched Out comp in Kapunda, SA and in particular some of the finals climbs. This sequence of Steph Dryfhout on her way out of the finals tree is one of the best from the event in photo vault.

It’s and occasionally giants fall. This massive Scribbly Gum, Eucalyptus racemosa, had remained safe from urbanisation and storms in a sheltered gully for decades until early in 2025 when Cyclone Alfred did the damage with the thin walled, almost see through stem collapsing. Not to be defeated epicormic shoots appeared a few weeks later.

It is generally acknowledged that reaction wood production differs between gymnosperms (softwoods) and angiosperms (hardwood). Compression wood is a readily visible characteristic of stems and branches in conifers whilst tension wood is typically not visible to the naked eye in hardwoods with stained sections and a microscope being required. But, as with most rules in nature, there are exceptions with this Weeping Fig, Ficus benjamina, clearly showing the presence of compression wood in the lower right quadrant of the section. The compression wood is much darker in colour with the bands being parallel with the growth increments. Figs are one of very few hardwoods which can produce compression wood.
