Primary Use:
Grout is used to seal the gaps between tiles to create a water tight barrier thus protecting the walls, floor and underlying structure from water/ moisture damage.
What happens if grout has lost its integrity:
Over time the moisture/ water seeps through and can do very costly damage behind the scenes that you may not even be able to see or notice at first.. It can lead to serious issues such as swelling dry wall, leaks, leaks into adjoining rooms/ flooring, wood rot and of course the high possibility of mold growth.
3 ways to tell if your shower needs re-grouting - and the benefits to acting early:
1: Missing cracks or whole sections of grout. Normal house movement, age and water exposure can over time cause the above to occur. These breaches compromise the seal and is the most urgent reason to re-grout.
2: Grout that is discolored and no matter what you try just can not be cleaned. If you are happy with your tiles and bathroom but feel not matter how much you clean it still
"looks" dirty. Re-grouting is a great way to bring your bathroom/kitchen/walls or floors back to a crisp, clean fresh appearance and would be a fraction of the price of a full renovation.
Finally..
3: Musty smells in your bathroom. Wet areas i.e.: showers/bathrooms can be the perfect breeding ground for mold and mildew. Once mold/mildew gets into porous/compromised grout it can be very difficult to remove with just cleaning alone, and it is also very likely to return again. Re-grouting not only removes the source of the issue it also improves your air quality and hygiene.
