One of the highlights of the tour was having Jonathan share his passion for relic hunting with the group. He brought along an incredible collection of finds spanning more than 2,000 years of history, each with its own fascinating story.
Among the treasures were Roman brooches, medieval buckles, Saxon silver coins, coins from the reign of Edward I and Henry V, 17th century trade tokens, and even an Iron Age gold stater modelled on an ancient Greek design. Hearing where they were found and the history behind them was just as exciting as seeing the artefacts themselves.
Jonathan also shared some remarkable statistics from his own detecting journey. He’s recorded around 1,300 Roman coins, 34 early medieval finds, 45 Iron Age artefacts and more than 1,000 medieval and post-medieval discoveries. Yet he pointed out that only around 10% of detectorists record their finds.
Jonathan’s first detector was a Minelab X-Terra 50, proving that the right start can inspire a lifetime of discovery. From there, his passion for history has taken him on an incredible journey.
