This tree has experienced significant dieback, with large dead limbs looming over the home β understandably, the client was concerned about safety.
On inspection, the only foliage remaining was epicormic growth β shoots growing directly from the trunk and main limbs, which the tree produces as a stress response when its canopy is failing.
After a careful assessment, we reduced the tree back to these epicormic growths β Removing any risk for significant branch failure and allowing this tree to retain the limited foliage it still has.
With the right conditions, weβre hoping it will respond by developing a dense, healthy lower canopy and can be maintained at a reduced size moving forward.
All branches and timber were retained on site, with the client planning to cut it up for firewood β making good use of the material.
Of course, not every tree makes a full recovery. If this one continues to decline, it can still play an important role as a habitat tree β providing hollows and structure for local wildlife
With the safety concerns addressed and any chance for failure reduced to a manageable level we hope to see this tree have a turn for the better. π€ Weβll be keeping a close eye on its progress.
