First of the baby climbing onions has hatched! Bowiea volubilis is a bulb that has more layers than an ogre and can mature up to 20cm in diameter. Every year it will grow a long scrambling flower vine that later dies back, rinse and repeat.

With temps rising and days getting longer, it's not just the plants waking up. Spiders, spooders, floofy nopes. Whatever name you know them by, these little guys are on patrol looking for delicious bugs to eat.
So next time you see one on your plants, appreciate that your plants have that extra level of defense against pests.

A couple of days of high humidity after several days of rain, this is a solid example of what can happen to a succulent or cactus that can't cope with such weather. This Mammillaria bocasana inermis got severe root rot despite not having had any water, it's insides turning to brown slime while the outside showed no change until it was too late. It was fine until suddenly it wasn't.

I wonder where the birdies is?
(hopefully not near my plants!)

Time for the winter growers to start dying back to bulbs. Sleep well massonias, sleep well Pelargoniums.

It seems the world does ride on the back of a turtle, at least as far as photography goes. This little dude helps provide enough backslope that I don't have to lay on the grass with the greenants.

Hope my plants don't mind looking a bit silly in their fancy silk pyjamas. This is a small experiment into using silk bags to catch the seeds. After getting buzzy with some pollen, the flowers get bundled up until the seeds drop and get collected in the bag.

Can you spot the difference? Even professional growers frequently get these two plants mixed up.
This is Echeveria dionysos (left) vs Echeveria purpusorum (right).
Dionysos is the progeny of purpsorum and another unknown Echeveria. It has shorter wider leaves. Purpusorum has longer pointier leaves. They are of similar size and colouring, with the same care requirements.
Browsing on ebay you might see the two names and pictures used interchangeably. While plenty of people make a genuine mistake, sketchy sellers may plead ignorance or play the language card to convince you that you simply misunderstood. The simple answer is that if something doesnt look or feel right, it probably isn't.
Unless you are prepared for experimental results, always do your homework. Research across multiple independant sources relevant to the topic.

Current occupants of the plant cage that started the trip down the rabbit hole. This piece of furniture was built as a response to my original cuttings being threatened by birds, possums and hoppers.

Another Kalanchoe flowering, thankfully not a deathbloom this time. K humilis has a reputation for keeping its flowers for up to a few months, lets see if this is true.

Gotta love it when the Massonias finally hatch and it's like a botanical Where's Wally for the first few weeks.

Latest arrival at the botanical menagerie. Pelargonium appendiculatum. Looks like the worlds most messed up carrot but is actually in the same family as geraniums begonias and petunias.
