Do rabbits REALLY love carrots? 🥕🐰

Cartoons would have us believe carrots are every rabbit’s favourite food… but are they?

I put it to the taste test with Coco. 😂

🥕 Carrots are high in sugar, so they’re best kept as an occasional treat rather than an everyday food.

September is a great time to plant corn seedlings in Melbourne. 🌽

Choose a sunny spot, enrich the soil with compost and plant the seedlings about 20–30 cm apart. Plant them in a block rather than one long row to help with pollination, then water them in well.

With sunshine, water and a little patience, those small seedlings will grow into Fluff’s Field of Dreams!

September is a great time to plant potatoes in Melbourne! 🥔🌱

Mine had just died back, which meant it was finally time to see what was hiding beneath the soil. You never really know how many potatoes you’ve grown until you start digging, and I was pleasantly surprised by this harvest!

The kids requested crispy squashed potatoes, so I boiled them until tender, squashed them, sprayed them lightly with oil, added some salt and baked them for around 40 minutes.

They came out crispy and delicious!

As promised, here’s how I set up my DIY wicking bins! 🌱

I use a 60-litre bin, two recycled 3-litre milk bottles and a length of PVC pipe to create a simple water reservoir beneath the soil.

It’s an inexpensive way to keep plants consistently moist, reduce watering and make good use of recycled materials.

🌱 What to plant in August in Melbourne

August is a great time to start getting the garden ready for spring.

Three things I’m growing this month:

🥕 Carrots
🍓 Strawberries
🌱 Asparagus

All three are growing in my own garden, with plenty of taste testing from Coco and the guinea pigs along the way. 🐰🐹
