What exactly is a "hardy annual" and why are we planting thousands of them while the weather is cold?
Many gardeners pack away their tools in autumn, but for us, this is one of the busiest times of the year. We're currently planting thousands of hardy annual flowers including poppies, ranunculus, anemones, delphiniums, Canterbury bells, and matricaria.
These flowers don't just survive the cooler months—they thrive in them. By establishing strong roots through winter, they reward us with armloads of blooms in spring.

In our latest blog, we're sharing: 🌸 What hardy annuals are 🌸 Why we plant them now 🌸 How we prepare our soil 🌸 The flowers we're growing this season 🌸 Tips for home gardeners
If you've ever wondered what happens on a flower farm during winter, this article is for you.

Comment "HARDY ANNUAL" and I will send you the link to our latest blog post.

Something beautiful is coming to Pure Maiden Farm this spring 🌸✨

Step back in time at our brand new Petals & Parasol Vintage Spring Festival — a charming countryside celebration inspired by the 1900s–1950s.

Think vintage cars, flower-filled gardens, old-fashioned children’s games, picnic lawns, local makers, spring blooms, and magical photo moments around every corner.

Dress in your favourite vintage outfit, bring a picnic rug, and spend a beautiful spring day among the flowers.

As the colder weather settles in, our flower field has officially gone to sleep for winter and we are now closed for a little winter break 🌱❄️

The last blooms of the season have finished, but behind the scenes, the work never really stops on the farm. Winter is one of our busiest seasons as we begin planting thousands of ranunculus corms, planting spring flower seedlings, and digging, dividing, and storing dahlia tubers ready for another beautiful season ahead.

While the field may look quiet now, we are already dreaming and planning for spring 🌸

We have something very exciting waiting for you later this year, so stay tuned over winter. We can’t wait to welcome you back in spring when the farm is bursting with ranunculus, paper daisies, and fresh new blooms once again.

Thank you for supporting our little flower farm this season ❤️

One of the secrets to long-lasting chrysanthemums is harvesting at the right stage 🌼✂️

We usually harvest our chrysanthemums when they are around 60–80% open. At this stage, the flowers are mature enough to continue opening beautifully while still giving excellent vase life.

✨Pro tips: if you cut at around 60% open, with a proper hydration and cool room storage (around 0–4°C), they can keep beautifully for close to 2 weeks before use.

A few harvesting tips we follow on the farm:
🌿 Harvest during the cool part of the day
🌿 Use clean, sharp snips
🌿 Remove lower leaves below the water line
🌿 Place stems into clean water straight away
🌿 Cool flowers quickly after harvest to maintain freshness

Chrysanthemums are one of our favourite cut flowers — strong stems, incredible vase life, and they keep opening beautifully even after harvest 💛
