It’s amazing how much a door handle can change the mood of a room.

This new brass hardware range at has the same beautiful form, but each finish tells a slightly different story. The knurled aged brass feels more tactile and detailed - perfect when you want a subtle sense of craftsmanship. The ribbed profile adds texture and shadow, giving the door a little more presence. The plain profile feels softer, quieter and more refined.

Then there’s the difference between aged brass and bright brass. Aged brass brings warmth and depth - definitely my personal favourite - while bright brass feels cleaner, fresher and a little more polished.

The humble bar stool doesn’t always get the attention it deserves.

But in a kitchen, it can make or break how the space feels.

Too bulky, and the island feels crowded.
Too light, and the room can feel unfinished.
Too uncomfortable, and no one actually wants to sit there.

The right bar stool brings balance, texture and ease. It supports everyday breakfasts, afternoon homework, pre-dinner drinks and those lovely lingering conversations that happen while someone is cooking.

It’s the first thing that welcomes you home, and when it feels calm, considered and easy to use, it changes the way you step back into your sanctuary.

Often, it doesn’t take a full renovation to make a meaningful difference.

Layered lighting can soften the space.

Mirrors can bounce natural light and create a sense of openness.

Glass panels in doors can help darker entries feel brighter.

A calm, beautifully resolved home rarely comes from adding more things. It usually comes from choosing better ones.

A pared-back palette, furniture that works a little harder, and thoughtful lighting can completely change how a space feels. When the visual clutter disappears, materials, texture, and natural light finally get the attention they deserve.

Minimalism isn’t about empty rooms. It’s about intention. Every piece has a role, every finish earns its place, and the result is a home that feels lighter, calmer, and easier to live in.

Rachel and a number of other local artists donated their beautiful work for this great cause. Here’s the biggest mistake I see people make when choosing stone.

They fall in love with a tiny sample.

The problem? Natural stone can vary dramatically from slab to slab. The colour, movement, veining and overall feel can shift far more than people expect.

So if the veining matters, and it usually does, always choose the actual slab.

You also need to understand how that slab will be cut, matched and joined. Especially with bookmatched stone, the joins can completely change how the pattern reads once it’s installed.

A sample is helpful for direction, but the slab is the real decision.

It’s one of those details that can completely change the feeling of a kitchen, bathroom or custom joinery piece, and it’s exactly why having a designer involved early can save you from expensive surprises later.

Swipe for the before images of this Living room transformation in Forestville

Custom joinery and lighter materials completely changed how this space felt.

Before, the room felt heavy and disconnected. Storage was cluttered, visual weight sat low and dark, and there was no clear sense of cohesion.

The shift came from simplifying and reworking the bones. Custom joinery creates a calm, continuous base, concealing storage while anchoring the TV. Lighter materials lift the entire palette, reflecting more light and softening the room.

The fireplace and open shelving introduce warmth and balance, giving the space both function and presence without visual noise.

What this really means is the room now feels open, cohesive and easy to live in.

Design takeaway: if a space feels heavy, it’s often not the size. It’s the materials, the joinery, and how much visual weight they’re carrying.
