We’re all looking for beautiful low light plants to brighten up that dull corner in our house. We’ve made a list of our favourite plants that can handle lower light levels.

2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)
3. Pothos (Epipremnum Aureum)

We’ve gotten a few questions lately about new growth coming out a little bit deformed or curled. Typically this occurs because of 2 main reasons. The first will be humidity, or lack thereof. If your plant is consistently putting out odd-shaped leaves that may vary in colour, it could very well be due to lack of humidity around the plant. The second reason could be under-watering or having an irregular watering schedule whilst your plant is producing a new leaf. If you dehydrate your plant whilst its unfurling a new leaf it will start to curl and droop, if you then water it suddenly it will try to return to its normal shape, which could potentially cause tearing and deformities on the unfurling leaf. Although it could be a number of other issues (like getting too cold overnight), these were the most common causes of funny-looking leaves in my home.

After A LOT of trial and error, I’ve finally got a grasp on caring for this mint adansonii. As you can tell by the older leaves, this plant can be very fussy about the conditions it grows in 😂.

LECA stands for lightweight expanded clay aggregate, which is clay pebbles that can expand and absorb water moisture. The clay balls are used instead of other growing mediums such as soil or potting mix. I personally love having a LECA hydroponics setup; I’m slowly transition to a soil-free household and loving it! Read on to learn why me and so many others praise LECA so much!
• The system is perfect be set up indoors, reducing soil, dirt, and pests in the home.
• Avoid over & under-watering. Because the plant will grow completely in water, it will not be under-watered. And without soil, the fungus and bacteria that causes root rot is not present either!
• Plants grow much quicker because their roots don’t have to push through compact soil to grow. Meaning they are able to absorb nutrients much more efficiently and quickly produce large root systems.
• No need for pesticides. Pests like the dark, damp conditions that often occur within soil. But insects don’t do well in water, clay, perlite, or other hydroponic growth mediums.

This syngonium aurea has become my new favourite plant 😍. The leaves emerge green then slowly fade to a yellow before hardening off with a cream coloured variegation. So interesting to watch!

Our plants that are grown in the leafy spaces nursery are typically grown from seed or propagation; we never import plants from outside Australia. The plants we order from our partners nursery are all grown locally with the same care I give to my own plants. Once the plants are in our possession we will first isolate them to eradicate any pests and recover from travel-stress. From there we move the plants into a controlled environment where the temperature, light, and humidity are under 24/7 monitoring. This is where our plants live until they are ready to be sold, in which case we move the plants into a separate greenhouse to acclimate from the tropical conditions in our nursery to the conditions typically found in Australian homes, ready to be shipped to your doorstep!

Hi I’m James, a plant-a-holic and founder of Leafy Spaces. I got my first two plants just as decor for my home, then I started filling every blank space with a plant until before I knew it, I was buying shelves specifically to house my plants 😅. I believe plants can turn any space into an area of peace and tranquility; that’s why I established Leafy Spaces! I want to bridge the gap and provide easy access to those unique plants that are on all of our wish-lists 🌿. I hope we can create a supportive community on this page and share our plant journeys together. Never be afraid to DM me if you have any questions about Leafy Spaces or your own houseplant needs, I’m always more than happy to help! Thanks guys 🥰
