The Lakadou from Timor-Leste produces a deep, resonant sound made from strong bamboo. When played together with the agogô, a coconut bell instrument used in Brazilian capoeira, the two create a unique blend: the warm, earthy tones of bamboo meeting the bright rhythm of the agogô.

Today we honour one of the most defining moments in our history — the declaration of independence on 28 November 1975.

Fifty years have passed, and while we celebrate how far we’ve come as a people, we also recognise that our journey is still unfolding. There is still much to build, much to strengthen, and many dreams yet to fulfil for our beloved people od Timor-Leste.

One thing remains the same:
the courage of our people, the resilience in our hearts, and the unshakable spirit that carried us through the darkest times.

Our steps today may still be the beginning of a longer road ahead — but they are steps of hope, determination, and unity.
