Behind this shed was completely overrun with Patterson’s Curse, thistle w**ds and blackberry.

Patterson’s Curse can be a real problem - it spreads fast, the seeds go everywhere if you’re not careful when removing the w**d and it’s toxic to animals if ingested.

Removing it early (before it flowers or seeds) is ideal; it stops the seeds from spreading any further and stops pollination occuring.

When removing Patterson's Curse it’s best to place a plastic bag over the plant first to contain any loose seeds.

A clean-up like this not only improves the look of the space but also reduces pest and snake risks - and opens the door for future landscaping plans ✅

Big job in Chirnside Park 😍

Full garden tidy across the front, sides and back - cutting back overgrown areas to improve air flow, increase plant health and prevent disease.

We shaped shrubs, cleared w**ds and debris around the rocks and paths and turned over the soil in bare spots before reseeding the lawn to bring it back to life.

This creates a solid base for any future edging, mulching or planting.

Fun fact: one of the trees here had a branch that actually grew through another trunk! It's called inosculation - a natural graft formed when branches fuse together over time.

Bentleigh Project – Part 2 ✅

If you caught the first post back on September 20th, this is the second half of the Bentleigh project!

Last visit we got the timber edging and sleepers in and prepped all the toppings ready to go.

This time we:

- Planted 4 Lilly Pillies

- Spread and compacted the toppings out the back (layered properly for strength and finish)

- Tidied up the garden beds and dug out around the pavers

- Added soil ready for groundcovers (this will be done at a later date)

- Mulched the remaining beds

- Turned over the turf area, added topsoil & layed out 16 rolls of Kikuyu turf

- Planted out the front garden — leaving the back as a blank canvas for future planting

For the front, we went with a soft and fresh mix:

- Convolvulus ‘Silver Bush’ along the fence

- Stachys byzantina (Lamb’s Ear) along the edging

- Bergenia cordifolia ‘Heartleaf’ behind for texture

- Iberis (Candytuft) in the corners

- Lomandra to tie it all together

All done and looking fresh — ready to take on the warmer weather ☀️

Croydon Project – Part 2 ✅

If you caught a glimpse of last Tuesday's post, this is the second half of that project — and it’s all wrapped up beautifully!

Out the back:

After the gardening and w**ding from our last visit, all the hard rubbish was removed.

We added 10mm fine pine bark mulch to refresh the garden beds and 20mm granite was laid and compacted to form a clean path. This gives future residents easy access to the washing line and front walkway without getting stones stuck in their shoes.

Together with the freshly painted deck and new fencing, this area really pops now!

Out the front:

Following the tidy-up of the Nandinas and front driveway, we continued prepping the garden bed for fine pine bark mulch and compacted 20 mm granite.

It’s now a solid, low-maintenance base ready for any decorative touches or planting the new residents might want to add later on.

Always satisfying to see a project come together 💪

Upgrade in progress in Croydon 💪

Here’s a look at the beginning of this project 👇

🔹 Out the front

We freshened up the Nandinas, cleared w**ds from the driveway area, levelled off the granitic sand and then compacted and built it back up with layers of 20 mm granite.

Handy tip: always compact aggregates in layers to make sure they settle properly 👌

🔹 Out the back

We gave the rear garden bed a decent tidy by removing w**ds, taking out the dead ornamental pear stump and a struggling Tibouchina (beautiful tree, but it was disrupting the flow of the space) and cleaning up the Acacia, Dietes, mondo grass and clivias.

There’s still plenty more to do here — stay tuned to see how we wrap it all up!

Satisfying day in Mooroolbark yesterday!

At the start of last week, with the weather a bit drier, I sprayed out the broadleaf w**ds across these 2 lawns.

Herbicides take a little while to show results (usually a week or two before you start seeing the w**ds twist and curl), so in the meantime I came back yesterday to give it a big mow and tidy up.

The plan from here:

✅ Let the spray do its work

✅ Keep up regular mowing to encourage the grass to spread

✅ Feed the soil with a light fertiliser in a couple of weeks

✅ Overseed any bare patches so the lawn thickens up

Step by step this yard will bounce back into shape ✨

Handy tip 🌱 – after mowing a lawn with a lot of broadleaf w**ds, always wash down the inside of your mower. This helps remove any w**d seeds that cling to the deck and stops them from spreading into your next lawn.

Halfway there! 😍

First half of the job’s done – brick edge prepped, timber’s in, sleeper’s ready, and toppings are all prepped to spread later on. ✅

Next up we’ll:

- Spread toppings out the back

- Clean up the garden beds

- Clear around the pavers and add soil ready for groundcovers

- Mulch the rest of the beds

- Turn over the turf area, add soil & roll out 20 cubes of Kikuyu turf

- Wrap it all up with some fresh planting (still to be decided 😏)

Had a couple of quality mates on the tools today – big thanks to you both 🙌

This one’s going to look unreal when it’s finished… just like that sunset 🌄

Got to have a play at the end with a very good boy 🐶

Stay tuned for round two 👀

Big transformation in Edithvale!

This family has been waiting patiently for spring to arrive — and for good reason!

Spring brings the perfect conditions for laying turf: warm soil for strong root growth, rainfall for moisture and plenty of sunshine to help it thrive before the heat of summer ☀️

Part 1

After the old roofing, upright support posts and concrete slab were removed, we brought in 6 cubic metres of soil and laid 50 square metres of TifTuf Bermuda turf. This is a soft, drought-tolerant grass that holds excellent winter colour.

The soil was carefully levelled and rolled to ensure maximum root contact before laying the turf for a seamless finish.

Part 2

In another section of the back yard we removed the old concrete brick paving, cultivated and added soil, installed edging and created two distinct zones:

✅ A lush new turf area

✅ A stylish low-maintenance section with w**d matting, 10mm Ice from Burdetts (Langwarrin) and feature pavers

The final step - water, water, water! Turf needs heavy watering at the start for it to establish properly.

With some consistent watering and tender love and care this lawn will be thriving!
