I had the pleasure of meeting Namira at PSA26, and what an impressive young pharmacist.

Namira was awarded PSA Intern Pharmacist of the Year 2026, and she has an important message for international pharmacists and pharmacy students navigating their own journey in Australia.

She has worked hard, contributed to our profession and demonstrated the kind of passion we want to see in the future of pharmacy.

Now, Namira is looking for her next opportunity as a pharmacist, and I would love to see our profession rally around her.

“We’ve always done it this way.”

Possibly one of the most dangerous phrases in healthcare.

Because healthcare changes.
Evidence changes.
Technology changes.
Our scope changes.
And most importantly, the needs of our patients change.

Experience matters. But experience should never become an excuse to stop questioning, learning or improving.

Some of the biggest opportunities in pharmacy right now require us to let go of what pharmacy used to look like and start building what it could look like.

So when someone says, “We’ve always done it this way,” my next question is: “But is it still the best way?”

That’s where progress starts.

Tonight I had the privilege of speaking at the Rotary Club of Essendon about my journey, what has shaped me, and why I care so deeply about healthcare, access and community.

I spoke about arriving in Australia as a refugee, the struggles and opportunities that followed, and the responsibility I now feel to hold doors open for others.

These are values I am privileged to put into practice every day through Pharmacy 777 Pascoe Vale and the Rotary Club of Pascoe Vale working within community to improve health literacy, create access and help people feel seen and supported.

These conversations are important because they challenge perceptions and remind us what refugees can contribute when given opportunity, what women can achieve when given a seat at the table, and what healthcare professionals can do when we think beyond the walls of our clinics and pharmacies.

I will never take for granted the opportunities this country has given me. The best way I know to honour them is to use my voice, my profession and my experiences to create opportunities for others.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Essendon for welcoming me and creating space for conversations that strengthen communities.

Proud to represent Pharmacy 777 and community pharmacy at the 25th Anniversary International Overdose Awareness Day Commemorative Forum, alongside Penington Institute, SHARC and Family Drug and Gambling Help.

Today was about remembering those we have lost, supporting the families and communities affected, and recognising that overdose can affect anyone.

As pharmacists, we see patients every day. We have an opportunity to talk about medicine safety, Naloxone and overdose risk, reduce stigma and make sure people know where to get help.

We need more health professionals and frontline workers being proactive, increasing awareness and helping people feel safe asking for support.

Don’t wait for someone to ask for help. Start the conversation. One conversation could save a life.
