So... you come a cross a plant with "soft" roots and your first thought is "noooo.... not rot!!". And you start chopping the roots.
But always stop and evaluate first.
It may not be rot at all. It could be that it just didn't get enough water and it is dehydrated.
Look closely when you feel and see that the plant is soft. Are the roots brown and mushy squishy soft OR are they shrivelled and spongy soft?
Brown and mushy squishy is rot.
Spongy soft and "bouncing back" like a sponge when you gently squeeze them is dehydration.
If you are still not sure, do a scratch test. With your fingernail, gently scrape some skin away in the place you are worried about. If it is brown underneath, then rot. If it is white then all good, it is just dehydrated and needs water.
You will soon learn the difference and save cutting into and chopping a perfectly good plant.

Came across a quite badly dehydrated plant when repotting a couple of weeks ago. Gave it a good soak in a bucket of water for a few days before replanting.

A couple of months ago, I found this poor plant that had rot that had self healed and was also quite dehydrated. Gave it a repot and this is it today.
Lovely new growth with lots of buds and a beautiful flower that had just opened. ❤️🤍
