Every memorable garden has one thing in common — layers.
Not just plants placed randomly, but a structure that mimics nature itself.
Groundcover layer
The living carpet. It protects soil, suppresses weeds and visually softens hard edges. Without it, gardens feel unfinished.
Shrub layer
This is where texture and seasonal interest live. Flower, foliage, movement — the part people interact with most.
Understory layer
Small trees and feature forms that create depth and perspective. They guide your eye and make a garden feel immersive rather than flat.
Canopy layer
The ceiling of the garden. Provides shade, scale, wildlife habitat and emotional presence. This is what makes a space feel like a place.
When these layers work together, the garden stops looking planted…
and starts feeling natural.
If your landscape feels empty, harsh or “new build”, it’s almost always missing layers.
