Sustainably sourced, Expertly harvested & nurtured with love .... the Original harvester, motivated in the 1970's to save these uniquely Australian, Iconic, 'living fossils' from destruction due to farming & urban sprawl!πππ
40+yrs of harvesting later, within the same family, they have it down to an art form...with impeccable survival rates... surety that their plants will endure & thrive with the correct care.
Xanthorrhoea epitomise the Australian bush: their exquisite uniqueness & individuality demonstrates years of history reflected in it's trunk. Oh the stories, wisdom & patience they could share!
They are very slow growing, 1-2cm a year!.... with some elderly specimens being amongst the oldest living plants on a worldwide scale, surviving for as long as 600 hundred years! They are certainly worthy of reverence in my opinion!π
It takes 10 yrs to begin to form a trunk! The 'trunk' is formed by the leaf stems that are bound by the strong water proof resin the grass tree leaves produce. The resin had many uses historically by both the indigenous & much later the colonists.... & even today as incense & a natural pigment.
Grass trees continue to impress even below the soil surface! Within their root system they share a symbiotic relationship with the mycorrhiza fungus for essential nutrient absorption, the grass trees foliage source the sun for them both.
Thus the importance of root ball care, at harvest & when replanting!
Xanthorrhoea dislike root disturbance intensely! A transplant guide is supplied to ensure correct handling.
Another remarkable characteristic of these astoundingly enduring trees is their ability to survive wildfire & their rapid response of flowering profusely soon after.
Their nectar rich spike of flowers grows 2-3cm a day, attracting a wide variety of insects, birds & mammals. One flowering stem can produce 10,000 seeds! 'We will survive!'
After pollination the flower stem forms a tough pointed spike over 3mtr high! Historically an Aboriginal favourite as a spear. In fact Grass trees... 'Yakka' provided a variety of uses for indigenous peoples including food, drink, & materials used in the manufacture of tools & weapons. The resin most diversely.
Today the magnificent Iconic Xanthorrhoea have been given another chance at survival due, originally, to the efforts & initiative of grandfather & family in the 1970's. Xanthorehoea are protected & should only be sourced via licensed harvesters... defined by the govt approved tag attached!
Grass trees have become highly prized as striking feature trees, their spectacularly individual shapes adding powerful structural enhancement to garden spaces & even pots.
