Here is a recently completed unit we designed, shaped by the character of the existing 1960s home on site.

Brick and painted fibre cement create a restrained, durable palette that feels familiar yet contemporary, helping the new building settle naturally into its surroundings.

A further look inside the Penola Innovation Centre at St Patrick’s College, Launceston. These images focus on the learning environments and the quality of space within the STEM facility, including the cafeteria, which forms a central heart of the school.

Internally, plywood lining has been used to create a robust yet warm backdrop for daily student life — durable enough for a high-traffic environment while bringing texture and natural character to the spaces.

With much of the building perimeter required to function as fire separation walls, natural light is introduced from above through a series of sawtooth roof forms. This allows consistent daylight to pe*****te deep into the learning areas, creating bright, evenly lit laboratories and classrooms throughout the day.

Five years in the making, the Penola Innovation Centre, a new STEM facility, is now complete at St Patrick’s College, Launceston.
Conceived as a spine running through the centre of the campus, the building brings together learning, movement and connection. At its heart is a shared social hub — a place for collaboration, informal learning and the everyday life of the school.
With students returning today, the Penola Innovation Centre is ready for its first full year of use. Thank you, to St Patrick's College, Launceston , for the original conception and vision for the project, and to Beardwood Pty. Ltd. for their work and collaboration in bringing it to life.

Back visiting this project a couple of years on from completion. Great to see the additional deck and landscaping. The house has settled comfortably into its site, with a simple palette of timber, weathered iron and bagged brick. Externals for now — interiors to follow.

Week one done after returning to the office following the Christmas break.

Unfortunately, this little project won’t be going ahead, but we still wanted to share it! Designed as a small studio space tucked into a garden, it was meant to be a serene space for family to stay and a space to unwind.

While it won’t come to life, we love how the design came together!
