One of the things I enjoy most about topiary is that it allows you to dream beyond what is practical.

This was a concept I developed years ago while exploring ideas for a fantasy film project inspired by the spirit of Narnia. The idea was a monumental topiary horse leaping over a pack of topiary hounds, set high on the hills overlooking a valley.

It’s not a real garden (yet), just a concept visualisation, but I often find that some of the best real-world projects begin as impossible ideas sketched on paper.

As topiary artists we’re not only maintaining plants, we’re also shaping imagination. Every topiary starts with an idea, whether it’s a simple sphere, a cloud hedge or something a little more ambitious.

I’ve been in the UK for the past month and have been enjoying it immensely. Unfortunately I can’t stay, but I’m looking for a great gardener in Sheffield for my daughter’s new place.

The garden needs someone who genuinely enjoys bringing a space back from spring overgrowth, refining hedges and topiary, contouring and shaping, then maintaining it thoughtfully throughout the year.

I would do it myself, but I’m heading back to Sydney tomorrow. 🌳😊

First contour cut and foundational shaping on these hedges. Precision really starts revealing itself on the second refinement trim, when the forms begin to look almost digitally sculpted. 🌳
