SOLUTIONS FOR A GREEN HOME GARDEN EVEN WHEN YOU’RE BUSY
After many rounds of choosing, planting, and caring for plants—and then replacing, replanting, and looking after the gardens at my own homes I’ve drawn a few conclusions to help save time and effort while still keeping a lush, thriving garden:
• Automatic watering: Set up an automatic watering system to make sure your plants always get enough water, even when you’re busy. You can use regular, inexpensive hoses and valves. Just add a smart switch, which you can control remotely by phone or schedule with a timer, and that’s all you need.
• Choose low-maintenance plants: Grow plants that don’t need much care, such as cacti, aloe vera, foliage plants, or spider plants. From my experience, leafy plants (without flowers) usually require less sun and nutrients than flowering ones. They also shed and wilt less, so trimming once a month may be enough. For sunny balconies where you can’t check often, it’s best to try water-loving plants like lotuses, water lilies, or aquatic orchids.
• Soil mix: For outdoor gardens, simple loose soil is fine. But for plants under a roof, in a greenhouse, or indoors, it’s better to use ready-made planting substrates (just search “planting substrate” on e-commerce sites). These mixes drain well, keep roots airy, but also retain moisture, so you don’t need to water as often.
• Use slow-release fertilizer: Apply fertilizer once and let slow-release granules provide nutrients gradually over time. However, if you’re not too busy, I personally prefer organic fertilizers, as they’re better for the soil’s micro-ecosystem.
• Pick the right spot: This is the most important factor. Place your plants where they get the right amount of light and temperature so they thrive with minimal care. Well-ventilated spots, like near big open windows or skylights, help prevent fungal problems and minor plant diseases. From my own observations: flowering plants love sunlight (lavender, roses, petunias, lotuses, water lilies, etc.); non-flowering plants tolerate lower light (ferns, snake plants, pothos, spider plants, etc.); and plants with dark, non-flashy foliage need the least sun and can grow indoors (peace lilies, dracaena, “happiness plants,” etc.).
I really enjoy gardening and growing plants. If you have any more tips, please share them—I’d love to learn from you too! 🌱
