I just wrapped up painting the full furniture set for Hasbro’s HeroQuest, and I’m that much closer to diving into an adventure with a complete set of painted miniatures with my wonderful nieces!

Total immersion is the aim. Now that I have a set of fully painted dungeon furniture; next up are the characters and monsters. Then add a candle or two, put on a dungeon ambience soundtrack, have a mid-dungeon meal of fruit platters and lamb shanks (and wine or mead if the little ones are not present). And if you are inclined a little themed dress-up doesn't go astray and we are nearly there 🕯️🍷🍻🍇⚔️☠️🕵️🪓🏹

How to get a semi-convincing red glowing lightsaber effect on your Star Wars Sith models (it's trickier than you might think).

Prepare your airbrush (with a smaller needle if possible) and mask off the hilt of the lightsaber and the arm of your model to protect these areas from overspray. Start applying the fluorescent red at the base of the lightsaber making sure you cover evenly from all angles, and then with each progressive mix move closer to the center of the saber and add more orange, orange-yellow and fluorescent white to create a smooth gradient from red at the base of the lightsaber to orange/white at it's center point. Then do the same thing again moving from red at the tip of the lightsaber to orange/white at the center.

If working on a larger model (like the 1/6 scale Revan statue in the photo) you can do this gradient several times to help sell the effect even more. Fluorescent paint is very transparent so be careful not to build up too many layers. I would also add a drop of flow improver on top of your normal airbrush thinner to help the paint go through the airbrush easier. Finally add a layer of gloss varnish to sell the effect even more.

If you don't like red lightsabers, you can achieve the same effect with other colours too using the same basic principle. I use Green Stuff World fluorescents and sometimes Vallejo, but any brand should work ok. I suppose you could also achieve a similar effect by glazing with a brush, but I have not tried this myself.

Hey Everyone, I hope you have all been well, rolling sixes and finishing hobby projects. I have been hidden away trying my hand at painting large 1/6 scale statues and other large models. I have an Anycubic M3 Max 3D printer and its scary and exciting to know I can essentially print and paint anything.

Here are three very old photos taken back in the 90's (1996) before I took a long hiatus from the hobby. It's so cool to look back at the vibrant painting style of the day! This is back before the internet became mainstream, White Dwarf and Box Art were your only references and Mike McVey was a living legend (nothing has changed in that respect!). The first photo is of my beloved dwarfs from around the time of Warhammer Fantasy 3rd edition. They were my first ever painted army that I was actually proud of (2nd edition 40k Blood Angels were my first painted army). Unfortunately, I left the colourful little bearded fellows in a display window in a hobby shop in Albany Western Australia, and when I took a long break from the hobby, I forgot to retrieve them! They have spent decades wandering lost and homeless, holding on to the hope that they will be found and sent back to their true home (if anyone has seen this army the please let me know!!!). The 2nd photo is of the beginnings of a Chaos Space Marine force made up of Word Bearers, Night Lords and Death Guard. I love the look of bright green and gold colour scheme for the old Plague Marines! The ruined buildings were made following the old Games Workshop Wargames Terrain-Making guide which I still have to this day. Sadly these models were lost in the warp, but at least I still have the photos. The third photo is a zoomed-in shot of some Word Bearers and a few models from the original Warhammer Quest including the Mighty Minotaur! I must admit that looking at these photos brings back many great memories. I can still remember the unique "feeling" I had painting each and every colour scheme. I think when you spend hours focused on a single miniature, an army colour scheme or even a specific part of a single miniature (like the wooden club on the minotaur) it captures a certain "pleasant painting feeling" that you felt in that particular moment of your life. For me these are feelings I can vividly recall years later, and they can transport me back to the that moment as if it was yesterday!
