A milestone moment for Common Ground East Perth! The first residents have now begun moving into their new homes, marking an important step in Western Australia’s efforts to end chronic homelessness.

Working with the Department of Communities, we have been proud to lead our dedicated team on this project, which provides permanent supportive housing alongside health, wellbeing and community services. Developed through extensive consultation with people with lived experience and the housing sector, the design focuses on dignity, safety, autonomy and connection.

Common Ground is more than housing. For many residents it will be a place to rebuild, reconnect and establish long-term stability. Gresley Abas is honoured to have contributed to this important project and we look forward to seeing the community that grows here.

A new gateway to John Forrest National Park!

Our Glen Brook pedestrian bridge is now complete, guiding visitors from the new arrival carpark into the heart of Western Australia’s oldest national park.

Rising lightly above the valley floor, the bridge and elevated walkway weave through the bushland, minimising impact while offering a universally accessible path through the landscape.Constructed from weathered steel and recycled timber, the structure is designed to quietly blend into its surroundings over time.

This milestone marks the first step in the broader redevelopment of the park for DBCA, with the new Park Hub and visitor facilities to follow.

Monday night our studio hosted a packed DI Provocation event on Density Done Well in support of the Density Done Well exhibition in Central Park.

A big thank you to everyone who joined the discussion led by Ross Donaldson, WA chapter AIA President - and to Jimmy Thompson (MJA Studio), Greg Ewart (Hillam Architects), and Jonathan Lake for sharing ideas and experiences around how architects can drive better housing outcomes through alternative practice models. This is a subject close to our hearts at Gresley Abas.

It was energising to see so much curiosity and optimism for tackling housing challenges together.

Here’s to density — done really well.

Get down to the Central Park lobby to view the exhibition before the end of week!

As we head into 2025 with exciting projects underway, we’re reflecting on a 2024 milestone—the completion of our Dayton Sports Complex for the City of Swan. Gresley Abas was proud to design this 140,000 sqm state-of-the-art facility, bringing the community together with top-tier amenities for hockey, AFL, cricket, soccer, tennis, basketball, and netball.

The complex features interconnected pavilions around floodlit fields and courts, alongside a community and youth centre, creating vital spaces for connection and activity.

Sustainability remains at our core, and this project embodies that commitment. Designed with Green Star equivalency, it incorporates eco-friendly features, including an origami-inspired roof that harvests rainwater and creates stunning light effects with its colourful soffits.

We’re thrilled to share that the Dayton complex was awarded the West Australian Football Facility of the Year 2024! So proud of the team!

"The Dayton District Open Space is an outstanding example of how the right facilities can truly enhance a community. These modern, accessible football grounds will not only support the growth of our game but also serve as a hub for bringing people together."

We are so excited by the announcement this week of the engagement of Atlas Building (WA) Pty Ltd to commence construction of Common Ground Mandurah. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks. Gresley Abas is incredibly proud to have been involved in this project since inception. This project is the result of tremendous collaboration and partnership with many people and organisations, including the fantastic team at the Department of Communities WA, along with stakeholders and a broad team of consultants.

The design for the project aims to deliver high levels of social and environmental sustainability, with the architecture emerging from a strong connection to place and context. Common Ground Mandurah is an inclusive model providing permanent housing for people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. For many tenants Common Ground will be their forever home. For some, the apartments will be a safe place where they can rebuild their lives.

The apartments will provide much-needed housing for people in need to live with dignity, gain valuable life skills, training, and health support to help break the cycle of intergenerational trauma and achieve independent resilience. As with the Common Ground East Perth project, consultation with those with lived experience of homelessness formed the core of the design process.

It’s been busy times at Gresley Abas. For the first half of 2024, we've been hard at work incubating several amazing projects. Documentation for one of these great projects, the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre, is almost complete. This important community asset is set for redevelopment which will make it an even more welcoming hub for people of all ages, abilities, and cultures. Our design is deeply inspired by Broome’s unique local context, landscape, and community. We look forward to the next phases of realising this uniquely ‘Broome’ project.

Perth Design Week begins this week with an impressive and inspiring range of events, exhibitions, discussions, and presentations. We are looking forward to participating.
We are especially excited about staff members, Sebastian Robinson and Prunella Bui's involvement in two great events.

As a member of The Flaming Collective, Sebastian will be presenting at THE GAY* AGENDA IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT Event, where he will be discussing how q***r theory can be translated through an architectural lens.

Prunella is part of the EmAGN WA (Emerging Architects and Graduates Network) presenting YOUNG PERTHIAN DESIGNERS UNMASKED. With other members of the Network, she will be discussing how emerging designers are creating opportunities at a time when young people face so many challenges to grow stable futures.
