Once complete, the warm, inviting and flexible nature of Northern College of the Arts & Technology's new Study Centre will provide students and staff with an ideal space for learning, collaborating and socialising.

The combination of natural materials, soft lighting and expansive glazing creates an environment that supports and encourages engagement and collaboration while providing space for more focused, quiet, and independent work and activities, as well as supporting passive supervision.

Providing a direct visual and physical connection to the outdoor environment, an external deck will allow activities to extend outside, maximise the flow of natural light throughout the space and deliver the wellbeing benefits that we know come from feeling connected to nature.

The Centre’s design leverages a variety of sustainable design principles to minimise consumption, but, importantly, by repurposing an underutilised space, working within the existing footprint and retaining as much of the building’s existing fabric as possible, the value of the investment is also maximised.

After collaborating with Stawell West Primary School’s staff, students and community to develop the school’s Master Plan and design the upgrade of its main building, we’re looking forward to working closely with Ultrabuild Construction Group Pty Ltd, who has just been appointed as lead contractor.

Once complete, the works will revitalise and bring a new lease of life to the school's existing learning communities that cater to students from Prep through to Year 6. The open-plan environment, with dedicated learning neighbourhoods, will offer opportunities for direct and shared learning, quiet time, connection, and reflection and cater to a wide variety of learning experiences and activities.

Inspired by the native flora and botanicals that characterise the surrounding Grampians region, the design features earthy tones, textures and materials to create a safe, calming environment that supports wellbeing, learning and connection.

Most of us take basics like clean running water, a shower, a toilet with a door and somewhere clean to prepare our food for granted.

But for the K8 Hamlet community in the remote, mountainous Quang Nam Province in Vietnam, these were things they’d never had…. until recently.

Charity Change The One raised funds, sourced materials and found tradespeople willing to donate their time to build a dedicated sanitation block for the 50 households in this community

These basic, but hygienic, facilities will improve the health and wellbeing of the men, women and children of this community, for decades to come.

For us, the opportunity to contribute to a project like this and assist with the design of the sanitation block, which, in addition to the health benefits, will also bring basic dignity to the daily lives of each and every member of the community, has been most rewarding.

It was wonderful to take part and share in the St Bernard's Parish Primary School community’s excitement at the Ceremonial First Dig recently.

St Bernard's Catholic Parish, Bacchus Marsh Priest, Father John Paul Mount, Principal, Sr Mary Sarah Galbraith, Nigel Zimmermann from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, Michaela Settle MP, Member for Eureka and Sam Rae, Member for Hawke, did a wonderful job turning the sod for the new learning centre.

Dating back to 1890, St. Bernard's was the first Catholic school in the Archdiocese run by the Sisters of St. Joseph and was often visited by Saint Mary MacKillop in its early years.

The new learning centre’s contemporary architectural forms are inspired by the Parish church and existing heritage buildings, and celebrate the school's rich history, alongside the faith and traditions that bind the school and parish community together.

As humans, we’re biologically wired to seek connection with nature.

It helps regulate our nervous system and our body's natural cycles and rhythms, improving our concentration, memory, cognitive performance and overall wellbeing.

Which is why it’s so important for the places, spaces and environments where we live, learn, work and play to connect us with nature.

By prioritising longevity and adaptability in the design process, we create more sustainable outcomes, maximise return on investment, and extend a building's lifespan.

It’s about building flexibility and adaptability into a space or footprint. Exploring opportunities to repurpose rather than rebuild. Prioritising durability and suitability in material selection. Looking for opportunities to recycle or reclaim materials. And bringing it together with timeless design and architecture that transcends trends and remains relevant as needs and communities evolve.

As humans, we have an innate need to connect — to belong, to participate, to express ourselves and to be part of something greater.

When we create places, spaces and environments that support, foster and encourage these things, we help build stronger, more inclusive communities.

And stronger, more inclusive communities bring purpose and meaning to our lives, helping improve our individual and collective wellbeing.

Ever notice how you can step into a space and feel your mood shift almost instantly?

In designing places, spaces and environments, we carefully select and balance light, colours, textures and forms to stimulate the senses, influence emotions and shape experiences, to help us engage, regulate, focus, feel and connect.

By acknowledging, respecting and responding to the social, cultural and historical context of a site and community through architectural forms that express value and identity, we create places, spaces and environments that bring people together and bring out the best in them.

In the latest Education Australia (EA) newsletter, we shared how a well-considered Master Plan can significantly strengthen a school, TAFE, or university's building or capital works funding application.

A well-considered Master Plan adds significant strength to funding applications, demonstrating a clear long-term vision, strategy and plan for the development of your school or institution.
