Nicknamed ‘Jackson’ after the name of the street, “Anglesea House is an ode to both family and environment, that focuses on the interplay between architecture and the natural world.”⁠

Set into the rolling coastal terrain of Anglesea along the Great Ocean Road on Victoria’s Surf Coast, the vision behind the project was to create a flexible retreat that embraces both intimate family moments and panoramic views of the coastline.⁠

Issue No. 18 Feature • The Series • Perched on the coastal slopes of Victoria, Anglesea House – affectionately named ‘Jackson’ – is more than just a holiday residence. Designed by , the dwelling beautifully melds site, materiality and function, creating a space that caters to both large family gatherings and quiet, reflective moments.

With a deeply personal connection to its architect and sweeping ocean vistas to the east, Anglesea House reveals a seamless dialogue between the built and natural environments.

This one is currently shortlisted for Best Kitchen and featured on Grand Designs Australia 🤎 Please get in touch if you have a kitchen (or bedroom - I’m also fond of them, and living rooms, bathrooms and powder rooms… all the spaces really!) you’d like us to design for you in 2025 - we’re closed off now for ‘24 - yikes.

Project Feature • To breathe new life into Armytage House and honour its rich history, both and have kept its grandeur alive by carefully blending old charm with a cosy, artisanal feel. Originally belonging to George Armytage, a key figure South Yarra’s heritage landscape, Armytage House has seen various uses over time. Once a school and later a council building, it underwent a restoration by the new owners alongside WMK Architecture and Indre.

Introducing our Grand Design Australia Magazine House of the Year Showcase Shortlist Nominee,  AB House by .ji

At the core of this house’s conceptual framework is a question of separation and connection across the occupation of a holiday home. Organised into zones of different uses (long term, short term, and transition space), each element of the house is arranged via the rotational play of the corridor that generates complimentary opportunities for light, shade, and ventilation while ensuring seclusion.

At eye level, each part of the house is provided with different viewpoints and different areas of the garden. Above eye level, skylights along the west and east allow the collective areas to capture the sun, while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties.
