That grey-green crust on your apple tree bark is not a disease. It is not a fungus. It is not harming your tree.

It is a lichen — and your tree is in excellent company.

What it actually is: two organisms fused into one. The fungal partner provides structure and protection. The algal partner provides food through photosynthesis. Neither can do what they do together when working alone.

What it is not: it does not pe*****te the bark, extract nutrients, or block the cambium. It uses your tree as a surface in the same way a sticker uses a car door. The tree is entirely uninvolved.

Why its presence is a positive sign: lichen cannot survive in air contaminated by sulphur dioxide or nitrogen oxides. Its presence on your trees is a biological indicator that your garden's air quality is clean enough to support it. British ecologists have used lichen distribution maps to chart the recovery of air quality in British cities over the last forty years — and lichen has been expanding steadily as air pollution has fallen.

A lichen colony the size of your palm has been growing at 1 to 2 mm per year. It was likely already there before you moved in.

If a lichen-covered tree is in genuine decline, the cause is almost always underground or internal — root compaction, drought stress, or bark-boring insects. The lichen is a witness to those problems, never their cause.

Do not scrape it. Do not spray it. It is not the problem. It is the evidence that something is going right. 🌿🌳🍃

You will finally enjoy your backyard without burning eyes or smelling like a chimney after switching to a professional smokeless fire pit setup.

Most old fire pits are just metal rings on the grass that blow thick smoke into your eyes and make your clothes smell bad for days. A patch of lawn under a fire pit quickly turns into a muddy mess that ruins the look of your whole backyard. You usually have to move your chair every five minutes just to stay away from the stinging heat.

A stainless steel smokeless fire pit uses special air holes to burn the smoke before it ever reaches your face. This setup lets you sit closer to the heat and keeps your hair and jacket smelling fresh all night long. A dedicated gravel patio gives you a level spot for your chairs so your guests are always comfortable. Surrounding the area with flowers turns a simple burn pile into a stunning focal point that adds real value to your home.

Start by marking a large circle in your yard with a piece of string and digging out the top layer of sod. Install a thin metal landscape edge around the outside edge to keep your lawn grass from creeping into the patio. Lay down a sheet of heavy fabric and cover it with a thick layer of small grey pea gravel. Rake the stones until they are perfectly flat and level across the entire circle.

Set your smokeless pit in the center and place heavy wood Adirondack chairs in a wide ring around the fire. Dig a small trench around the outside of your metal edge for a lush planting border. Fill this space with dark brown hardwood mulch to keep the ground moist and cool. Plant large green hostas and round boxwood shrubs to give the space a structured and professional look.

Add bright yellow Goldsturm black eyed susans and purple salvia to attract honeybees and butterflies to your new seating area. Lay a few large irregular flagstones at the entrance to create a clean landing spot for your feet. Push a few solar path lights into the mulch to make the walkway safe to use after the sun goes down.

Use dry hardwood logs like oak or maple in your new pit because wet wood will still create smoke even in a high end stainless steel unit. Keep a small metal shovel nearby to scoop out the cold ash every few weeks to keep the air holes clear and the fire burning hot.
