Following on from the previous post, I checked the Brix of this lime hybrid, which measures the sugar content of the juice, and it showed a reading of 12 and another fruit of 15, which is the % of sucrose. Most limes max out around 7-8, but the parentage has mandarin so this will obviously increase the levels. Acid levels must be slightly lower as well, so the sugars are more noticeable. A blood orange I checked here which wasn’t quite ripe but still excellent flavour was 10. Another lime hybrid was 7.5. So you can see this is a good result.

Three different Australian lime hybrids, all unique and interesting with the contrast of colours and tastes. The red akin and orange fleshed one may be the first semi@sweet hybrid I have produced, I was actually surprised by how it was not only sun acid but also had a sweetness to it. Will try this one out further to see if it was a one off or just my taste buds.

Not much to look at on the outside, but this Fingerlime hybrid is spectacular on the inside! It was a little pink/purple last year in its first fruiting year, which I’ve found is not a true reflection of its potential. Second year fruit is much more impressive. Love the colour and the taste is epic too.

Some tuber comparisons. A Portulaca from CentralQld, should be P. pilosa but it has a really big tuber and the leaves are more slender, collected this one a long time ago and it keeps itself propagated in a pot. Comparison with Marsdenia australis (bush banana) and Curculigo ensifolia in the middle.

Erythroxylum australe, a great compact native shrub that’s extremely adaptable and hardy, can be hedged as well. This particular phenotype has very ovately shaped fruit, turning a dark crimson at maturity and becomes swollen and very sweet.

Sprouted bunya pine seeds. Both endosperm and sprout are delicious, the sprout having a sweet pea type of taste, crunchy. The raw white endosperm tastes to me to be sweeter than unsprouted seeds, probably as the developing seed converts carbohydrates in more simple sugars to fuel growth. Definitely worth investigating as a more gourmet native food item.

Zanthoxylum brachyacanthum, Thorny Yellowwood, Rutaceae family. Many Zanthoxylum are used as spices, most notably several species used as Sichuan Pepper. The native Zanthoxylum brachyacanthum also has very aromatic and interesting seed capsules which may have potential as a local spice. Interesting to see some research on this, as they have an awesome scent. bushfood
