[packaging]
Every now and then, we still make something for sale beside our crazy parenting life and full-time jobs.
We wrapped every item in the Kraft paper saved from online shopping parcels, and decorated with foliage I picked up from walks around the block.

Happy new year!
It’s been a while since our last post. We took a “baby break” welcoming our baby girl Hazel into the world. The parent life has been different and sometimes difficult, but truely rewarding. We can’t wait for Hazel to join us in the studio when she gets older …how fun (or messy?) will that be!
These “Swirl Plates” are the first items I made back to the studio. They are my favourite.

Octopus Vessel|The Grain Collection
As a part of our experiments, the making of this vessel has been very interesting. We were curious about how the clay will form its own shape organically during the firing process. As a known fact, clay tends to melt down slightly in the kiln when it reaches 1260 degree before it become “stoneware”. We scrolled the slab into strips and rolled it into a cylinder, bend the strips gently into an octopus-like shape, and let it bend down more during the firing process. This vessel is like a living creature which has been constantly changing its form.

Tower Vessel|The Grain Collection
Through the making process, we were trying to explore the spatial relationship within a smaller scale object.
Unlike other media, It’s always been challenging to make rigid form with clay, as it’s not the its nature to keep straight lines. We have been experimenting various technique to achieve the architectural form we desired.

Mountain Vessel|The Grain Collection
As a part of our special collection, the vessel is inspired from the organic form of Chinese “Shanshui” painting. “Shanshui” is translated as “natural landscape” in English but it literally means “mountain-water”. We appreciate this ancient abstract art, as it represents the artist’s philosophy rather than the reality.
The idea came across in a late night when we tried to reuse some of the off-cuts from another project. We worked with the shape of the off-cuts and created forms from it, going with the flow. It reminds us of the many late nights making study models back in the architectural school. After all these year, we still enjoy the process of making as much as the finished product.
