Interesting article about the Australian Dream and how architecture needs to meet the changing dynamics of the new family groups.

Louise Johnson takes a look inside the Australian home and examines the changing character of the suburban idyll that maintains a hold on our national psyche, as the composition of its domestic spaces continues to evolve in response to the rising density of our major cities and growing ethnic and cu...

When Sydney square metres are at a premium we can certainly learn from the Japanese masters who make small spaces work hard for the occupants.

Architect Takeshi Hosaka has built himself Love2 House, a Tokyo micro home that has a total floor area of 19 square metres under a pair of curved roofs.

What happens when an architect designs his own house based in the inner west of Sydney? The project received an architectural commendation in the Marrickville Medal with the judges commenting that it was a “bold contemporary infill, utilizing a traditional form within an eclectic historic context.”

Importantly the house works very well for a grown household of four with separate living areas and indoor/outdoor spaces.

Project Showcase: The Roseville House project involved alterations and additions to a large Federation family home in a conservation zone. The new works included bedroom accommodation, living spaces, landscaping, pool, and car access.

The existing street façade is retained and enhanced with a new modern colour scheme. The addition to the rear sits respectfully under the existing eave and cantilevers over the kitchen to reach into the garden.

The outcome was a beautiful renovation to a heritage-listed building that allowed the family to enjoy the seamless indoor/outdoor spaces that are synonymous with an Australian summer.

Project Showcase: The Balmain House site, which is located on the north-eastern end of the Balmain peninsula, terraces down from the street to meet the harbour. It has extensive views over Goat Island towards the Harbour Bridge.

The concept was to provide a process of discovery through the site. A discreet street entry connects into the original central hallway that offers glimpses of the view. The pavilion’s narrow plan provides access to the northern sun and excellent cross ventilation. It gains a sense of scale, filtered light and indoor/outdoor connection from the adjacent lawn and features eucalyptus.

The strength and simplicity of the concrete form reflect against the warmth of the timber, the bark of the eucalypt tree, the sparkle of the water and grounds itself into the site against the ever-changing context of Sydney Harbour.

Project Showcase: The Birchgrove House involved alterations and additions to a significant 1889 heritage-listed Victorian Regency residence. The client's brief was to include (a) sun-filled living areas (b) retain the character of the existing build and (c) design a new study as the owner spent most of the week at home.

We responded by adding a new pavilion designed as a garden room with glass to three sides. The separation of buildings creates a new private courtyard accessed directly off the refurbished kitchen which allows solar access to the rear rooms of the original dwelling.

The result is a carefully considered modification that enhances the character of the existing residence and provides an environmentally driven modern family home.

Project Showcase: The original heritage-listed, semi-detached building in Kirribilli required modern solutions to continue to house a young, dynamic and expanding family.

The site presented many difficulties including a lack of privacy from neighbouring apartment blocks, poor external connections and a lack of accommodation. Melocco and Moore’s solution was the addition of a new three-story zinc-topped contemporary tower sleeved into a portion of the rear garden.

The result was a seamless, sophisticated home and a happy family.

Melocco and Moore were engaged by Lane Cove Council to design and document a rehearsal space and community centre at Burns Bay.

Located under a bridge in a new park, the building was designed as a general community space with optimal acoustics for its designated users, the local orchestral bands. A strong emphasis was placed on blurring the threshold between the built form and the park. Large glazed doors slide back to encourage outdoor performances where visitors can enjoy the music from the grass amphitheatre.

Internally, a simple colour pallet of light whites, timber and a strong red to the acoustic panels and carpet, provides theatrical link between the space and the performers. A playful circular motif in the timber sliding doors and light fittings abstractly represents a musical instrument or musical notation.
