Butterfly House (Apollo Bay) - Pendant lighting within the stair void.

The vertical LED strip lights complement the recycled timber batten screen in the background, with the highly polished aluminium finish reflecting the light and finishes including plywood and rammed earth beautifully.

Court House - One of our favourite projects!

Art Studio (Barwon Heads) - Perspectives of 3D Concept Design. A multi-purpose space for creating artwork that will double as guest accommodation.

The quarter circle floor plan provides a generous garden zone between the existing home and art studio. A vaulted roof with radiating recycled timber rafters emulates the ribs of a cockle shell. This form will lift the occupants internal gaze toward the centre of the rear garden. The roof falls to a consistently lower height along the boundary at each side, minimising the impact to the adjoining owners.

Vertical timber battens over the glazing gradually increase in density as they travel from North to West, for improved sun protection and privacy. Internally a mirrored splashback within the Kitchen will provide a sense of space. The exposed beams converge over the Bathroom’s shower, which is open to the sky. In Summer the shower screen door can be opened to invite the South East sea-breeze in, to cool the home; with a pleated retractable flyscreen keeping the flys and mosquitoes out! French doors open to the garden, with stone steppers fanning out at the entry.

Butterfly House (Apollo Bay) - The scaffold was installed over the Christmas break. Aluminium window frames are now partially installed, with double glazing soon to come. We’re hoping to achieve lockup in the coming months!

Art Studio (Barwon Heads) - Initial Sketch Design. Quarter circle concept for a multi-purpose space that will double as guest accommodation. The mark-up’s (slide 2) were done through the course of the meeting with our clients, and help to illustrate the rationale behind the scheme; with some minor adjustments to the fenestration, Kitchen joinery and storage made through the meeting to tailor the project to their specific requirements.

The next step is to put the hand drawn concept onto the computer and prepare CAD drawings, from which we will extrude the 3D computer generated model. The roof is to be vaulted, with exposed recycled timber beams emulating the radial ribs of a cockle shell. This form will lift the occupants internal gaze toward the centre of the rear garden, while the roof falls to a consistently lower height along the boundary at each side; providing a sense of shelter and also minimising the impact to the adjoining owners.

Butterfly House (Apollo Bay) - Stair and balustrade design concept.

We propose a frameless glass balustrade to the central stairwell and level 1 hallway to enable the focus to stay on the central tall Rammed Earth wall, which is a showpiece at the main Entry to the residential home. Each glazing panel is to be structurally supported by black powder-coated patch fittings; matching the Skyglass balustrade design for the external Terraces and maintaining continuity of the simple and clean aesthetic throughout. A simple steel flat bar handrail with factory welded steel plate brackets (also in black powder-coated finish), is also proposed to be patch fixed to the glass balustrade of the stair.

The design of this element ensures the stairwell space feels open and that the balustrade doesn’t add anything to detract from the external timber screen seen through the extensive glazing or Rammed Earth feature walls.

Geelong Sustainability | Open House Day 2025 - Saturday October 11th.

A 30-45 minute tour of the grounds and house will be provided by Architect Peter Winkler at 10.30am, with another at 12.30pm. We are happy to take questions following each tour.
