Spinach alternative for tropical climates - ceylon spinach / malabar spinach
This climber is a real beauty in the garden, easy to grow and perfect for subtropical and tropical climates or even just to grow in most climates during the Summer when English spinach finds it too hot.

The plant produces strange spike flowers that turn into berries - the berries aren't so good for eating but the beautiful colour is an excellent natural dye. Harvesting the seeds made for some very pink hands 😆

Leaves are best when cooked and I recommend adding some salt to balance out the flavour but otherwise they can be substituted in most dishes. I made spinach and feta turnovers with ceylon spinach and no one could tell the difference!

Lots of Kale ready to pick in the garden at the moment. It's a great low care plant and one of the few things that grows happily here from Spring all the way into the frosty winter.
And most importantly, excellent to eat! Here's a quick and easy Kale salad I put together, only took a few minutes to prepare.

Ingredients:

Kale leaves
1/2 of a Red Onion
1/4 cup dried Cranberries
1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds
Broccoli or broccolini
Optional - sliced apple
Dressing of choice - we used honey mustard but most creamy type dressings will go.

Remove the thicker part of the stem and roughly chop the kale leaves. Toast the slivered almonds and chop up the cranberries and red onion. Cut off the flower heads / florets from the raw broccoli and add everything in. Thinly sliced apple can also be added. Top with your dressing, toss together and voila! 😋

Yacon haul! I dug up the yacon patch last weekend and ended up with a huge bag full of tubers and whole other bag full of rhizomes to plant. I've planted a few and the rest are now available in my store -

$5.00 for 2-3 rhizomes

If any one knows any recipes I'd love to hear them, I've tried them in stir fry and baked but I've got a whole bag to use so I could use some new ideas! :)

Digging up what I thought was an empty bed last week, I found a whole lot of potatoes from last season still hiding in there :) There's some Purple sapphire (with beautiful purple flesh), Royal Blue, Pink fir apple and King Edward. Potatoes are really easy to grow, you just need some well worked soil at least 30cm deep, you can even use large containers or tubs. Start them when there is no risk of frost:

Cool climates - After last frost August-October
Temperate Climates - Mid July - October
Warm / Tropical climates - April-July

They can also be stored somewhere cool and dark for a month or two until you're ready to plant.

I've got a bunch of tasty potato dishes planned but I've put rest in my store and I've also divided up some Turmeric and Lemon Grass for planting, available now.

My baby leaf salad tub is coming along nicely!
Salad greens are easy to grow at this time of year in most frost free climates (or sheltered in frosty climates) and perfect for pots. Everything from spinach, rocket, lettuce, endive, mizuna, radicchio and even beetroot leaves can be used.
These ones are about 3 weeks old, I'll cut them for baby leaves at about 4-5 weeks and allow a few weeks regrowth before cutting again.

Winter has come!

The weather is getting colder but there is still plenty to grow:

For cold frosty climates, try growing parsnip, broccoli, carrots, beetroot, silverbeet, kale, onion and leeks.
Temperate climates can grow all those as well as pea, spinach, most greens like rocket and lettuce and many of our annual flowers as well.
Sub/tropical climates can grow all of the above as well as most of our annual flowers, beans and zucchini.

Get 15% off all orders over $10.00 on our website www.boondieseeds.com.au just enter WINTER15 in the discount box in the checkout (valid until 30/6/16).
