The first Ceratotheca triloba seedlings poked their heads up this morning in the seedlings house, I thought it might be a bit cold for them as yet but have been sitting the trays of seeds out in full sun to keep them warm and trigger their germination . It's a super hardy plant which no summer cottage garden should be without. If they keep growing we will have them available again in the Spring unless the cold temperatures slow them down.

I have been busy planting so many seeds so as not to lose some of my favourites and here is another one. This is Linaria purpurea "Cannon J West",a hardy perennial which when established will happily self seed around your garden. Last year I remember to save seeds of both this one and the white form as well. I have both planted in seed trays and at long last babies are poking their tiny heads through the seed raising mix....keep an eye out for when they are ready to go .

Silene vulgaris stuck there first leaves through in the seed raising house today. Commonly called bladderworts because of the shape of the flowers they make an interesting addition to the cottage garden. Keep an eye out for when they are available .

Two of my favourite cottage plants that have not missed a beat since being moved . Silene flos - cuculi "Petite Jenny"( double pink flowers) and Silene flos - cuculi "Petite Henri" ( double white flowers). They are commonly called ragged robins in England where it grows wild though the wild form does have single pink flowers. I have found them to be super hardy and perform well in both full sun and part shade. They do like a drink of water so it's wise to mulch them heavily. It's easily propagated by division or seeds . The flowers are also great as cut flowers. I have both seeds and cuttings in of them at the moment.

The rain this week has woken up the Pauridia capensis known as the Cape Star or Peacock flowers. It's another plant native to South Africa. It's classed as a cormous perennial but it does die down and you must not over water during dormancy or they will rot but it likes to be kept damp during growth. I won't have any of them available this year as with moving I didn't get to divide them before they woke up.

Finally got around to repotting and splitting up my Sprekilia who unfortunately have now had a name change to Zephyranthes formosissma, that's quite a mouth full to remember but alas they will always be Jacobean Lilies to me. I will have more of these available come Spring time,oh and I'm still on the look out for the pink form of this( seen at a open garden years ago at Goondiwindi )so if anyone has it please let me know.

I'm a lover of the strange and unusual and one of my favourite groups of odd bods are the species Pelargoniums from South Africa. Over the years I've collected a few of them as they are not readily available in run of the mill Nurseries. South Africa hosts the majority of the world's species of Pelargonium with the majority of them being sun loving drought hardy plants ranging from herbaceous tubers to highly specialised succulents. They require perfect well draining mix and are best planted in terracotta pots with a good layer of drainage material plus a cacti succulent type potting mix. Propagation of them is by cuttings or seeds but must follow their growth habit with most kicking into full growth at present. I have been busy putting in seeds and cuttings but it will depend on them now as some years they will all grow and other years nothing but if you can track them down they are worth it.

I've got my cranky pants on this morning and got so annoyed with these little stocking grow tubes that the poor plants can't escape from and end up dying. Purchased this lovely Phygelius from the big green shed as it was a colour I didn't have and I've always had such great success with these in my old garden but this just sat and sulked and slowly went backwards so I took the drastic measure of digging it out to see what was wrong. I would normally check for these wretched things but didn't in this case and the poor plant was basically root bound and so dry trapped in its death chamber. I pain stackingly removed the stocking, teased the roots out and soaked in a little Seasol hopefully I've caught it in time and the plant will survive.....mental note to ones self always check to make sure your plant hasn't got one of these death traps around it....... rant over happy gardening everyone.

Got to plant some seeds of two of my favourites today Geranium maderense and Geranium maderense Guernsey White. These are quite difficult to source but I was lucky enough that I purchased seeds three years ago and they grew and flowered so I saved the seeds. The sad part though is once they flower the whole plant dies but if you keep a careful eye you can catch the seed before it is lost. They make a wonderful feature plant in a shady area growing to a height of 1m. All going well we will have plants of these two available in Spring again but they do sell out fast.

Huge week planned for me here with lots of perennial seeds going in , in the new grow tunnel ready for Spring. I'm a little behind this year with moving but this week will hopefully catch me up a bit. My seed drawers are busting at the seams with seeds saved, swapped and purchased lots of wonderful cottage treasures going in to the seed trays.
