WONGA BEACH RESORT
Climate Positive, Resilient & Disaster Proof, 6 Star Eco Luxury Resort
This is a live project, not a concept exercise.
Wonga Beach Resort is a six-star, 66-villa eco-resort proposed for an exposed Far North Queensland coastline, designed to operate in Category 5 cyclone conditions, storm surge, coastal erosion and extreme rainfall. The architecture doesn’t respond to climate risk — it is produced by it.
The project extends a lineage of resilient tropical architecture developed in cyclonic, corrosive and remote environments. Wonga evolves this into a new prototype for climate-positive, disaster-proof luxury tourism.
Villas are elevated above surge levels and shaped to perform under cyclonic wind loads. Landscape is doing real work — stabilising dunes, dissipating surge energy and restoring rainforest corridors. A central lagoon operates as both the civic heart of the resort and part of the site’s hydrological system. A dedicated Interpretive Centre is proposed as the cultural heart of the project, with the intent for this to be developed in partnership with Traditional Custodians through ongoing community consultation.
The project has now been formally lodged for planning approval.
This is about performance first.
