Brussels Shakespeare Society

Brussels Shakespeare Society Shakespeare performed in Brussels The society’s first and simple beginnings was to hire a tiny 30 seat theatre, Theatre Ile St Louis just off the Grand’ Place.

The Brussels Shakespeare Society began in 1976 with a humble notice in the Bulletin in which Ian Flintoff asked if anyone was interested in performing Shakespeare in English. The response was considerable. Ian was at this time the Guardian correspondent for Brussels and was later to become an actor with the National theatre in London. They began performing a series of anthologies, which were basica

lly rehearsed readings, gradually gaining confidence for a full production. In the Summer of 1976, the society performed their first ‘al fresco performance’ à la Regents Park in the garden of the Jones family in Lasne, and within two years they staged their first chateau production ‘The Merchant of Venice’ at Ecaussines-Lalaing. In forty-six years the BSS has staged almost all of Shakespeare’s plays. In addition they have ventured into Greek Tragedy, Restoration comedy, Beckett, Lorca, Fry, Stoppard and a modern version of the Mystery Plays, as well as workshops run by prominent names in British Theatre such as Andrew Wade, voice coach of the Royal Shakespeare Society. Brussels Shakespeare Society presents

Yaren İlaslan as Diomedes & Stagiere / Soldier

Yaren doesn’t hold back when it comes to experimenting with different art forms. Her current ‘side quest’ with the Brussels Shakespeare Society might be new territory, but it mixes up her favorites: theater, history, politics, and absurd humor. Coming from a culture where everything is inherently political, Yaren found deep meaning in portraying the hopelessness of the modern slave. From production to stage, she is grateful for everything she learned with Antony & Cleopatra. After all, making memes and not taking yourself too seriously will definitely be essential skills to have in 2035.

Brussels Shakespeare Society presents

Mayra Verbeke Lacruz as Stagiere / Soldier / Servant

Mayra started doing youth theatre at the age of seven. This is her first time doing Shakespeare, not counting playing a Witch in The Scottish Play performed in a dusty classroom with a dirty bucket as prop. During the day (and after rehearsals) she studies physics.

Brussels Shakespeare Society presents

Ece Bunaklar as Stagiere / Soldier / Egyptian

Art has been part of Ece's life since birth, growing up in a creative family surrounded by painting, sculpture, and of course theatre. Ece acted in plays during elementary and middle school before stepping away from acting. After some time, she became a pianist in large theatre productions, where being close to the stage reignited this passion. After a long break, Ece returned to acting at university. Playing a character now brings her a sense of healing and expression that cannot fully be explained.

Brussels Shakespeare Society presents

Yolanda Valassopoulou as Influencer / Servant / Soldier / Farmer

A resident of Brussels working for the Institutions since 2009, Yolanda started her career as a journalist and then a diplomat in her native Greece and then the UK. She discovered the BSS a couple of years ago, along with a deep love for the theatre, on the stage and backstage. Best part: the great camaraderie shared by cast and crew! In her free time, she tries playwriting.

Brussels Shakespeare Society presents

Ela Nur Yılmazer as Influencer / Soldier

Ela is a fresh face, taking on the stage for the first time. She was the girl reading Shakespeare front row in high school during class and now she is a part of those stories she used to get lost in. When she is not on stage witnessing love & betrayal, she enjoys pretending to be a neurotypical girl who enjoys typical things.
For her role in Anthony&Cleopatra, she hopes to bring a smile to everyone’s faces. After all,she is just a girl from LA, both thrilled and terrified when she is caught in the crossfire between Rome and Egypt.

CAST PHOTO: it's curtain up time!

Months of rehearsals, costumes, chaos, laughter, late nights have brought us here, and we are now ready to tread the boards! 🤩🎭

If you want power, politics, impossible choices, disastrous decisions, propaganda, disinformation, and one of Shakespeare’s greatest love stories — come see what we’ve built! Turns out it feels surprisingly contemporary.

📍 Antony and Cleopatra will run from 19–23 May at Centre Culturel Jacques Franck, Saint-Gilles
