Two girls. Two months. Tanzania. One big adventure with C-re-a.i.d. to help the inhabitants of Njoro improve their living environment. The challenge is on! We are Lisa and Pascale, recent architecture graduates who found each other during a great Ghana thesis year together. At C-re-a.i.d., a Tanzanian voluntary organisation founded by Belgian architect Freya Candel, we found a grand new project to
throw ourselves in. This summer, we will put all our enthusiasm, creativity and practical skills to use in the Be part of something bigger-project in Njoro. Njoro is a neighbourhood in the center of Moshi. The majority of the dwellings here are low quality, one room rental houses. The crumbling mud walls and poor structures, lack of natural ventilation and presence of rodents create a damp living environment where hygiene and health can be compromised. The project's challenge: how can we help these people to improve their living conditions? The fact that this project involves rental housing adds a certain complexity: we want to find solutions which benefit the dwellers, without giving landlords the possibility to raise their prices and make the rooms unaffordable for a large part of the current population. This requires creative interventions, that are of good quality, yet are easily (re)moveable. The C-re-a.i.d.-project will involve exploring possibilities, learning from inhabitants and in the end implementing some strategic solutions in all neighbourhood dwellings. We need YOU!
