*PRUNING*
Let's take the advantage of winter to prune our fruit trees
In this season plants have lost their foliage and we seize this opportunity to remove unwanted limbs of our plants and shape them in the most desirable shapes we can.

*Advantages of Pruning*
1. Improves air circulation
2. Improves sunlight pe*******on
3. Gives a plant a desirable shape and size
4. Improves fruit quality
5. Increase fruit production
6. Removes diseased and or dead limbs
7. Stimulates new growth
8. Makes other plant management practices like spraying and or harvesting easy
9. Helps strengthen branches of the tree
10. Helps with plant longevity

Deciduous plants like Peache, Plum, Nectarine and Apricot lose their leaves this season. You'd think they are dead 🪾 but they aren't.
The other thing during winter growth is greatly reduced if not downright nonexistent.

1.Continue to Water your prunus tree according to your planned schedule.
CAUTION: Do not water late at night or very early in the morning when the temperatures are extremely low. Do it late morning or late afternoon.

2. Because days are short you can reduce Watering from 3 times per week to 2 times in a week.

3. In the height of winter cover your ground based plants with frost cover and relocate your pot based to the nursery or anywhere they'll be protected from the cold. As much as we protect them from the heat in the summer

4. Seize this opportunity when your trees have shed their foliage to prune and discard the limbs which you don't want.

In the next post I'll teach you about pruning

Plants just like people need to rest.
In the Winter season most fruit trees lose their leaves and go into dormancy. They have to go through dormancy
1. To conserve water and sap which they'll need to produce fruits during the fruiting season.
During winter the sap falls down to the stem and the roots and the plant canopy loses leaves in a process to preserve itself. (I'll discuss what happens in Spring when we get to spring)
2. Most fruiting plants need to go through dormancy for them to be able to produce fruits.
3. Most fruit trees need a certain number of cold hours to be able to produce fruits effectively
4. During this period, seeds such as stone fruits' seeds also go into dormancy for them to germinate in spring.(So basically plants need winter to reproduce)
