Why Do Some Turf Farms Grow Sod in Mesh?
Have you ever wondered why some sod comes with a plastic mesh backing while others don't?
The primary reason is speed.
Growing turf with mesh allows sod producers to harvest sooner because the mesh helps hold the sod together before a strong natural root system has fully developed. This can shorten production time and allow more harvest cycles from the same field.
For growers, mesh can offer:
• Earlier harvests
• Faster production cycles
• Easier handling of younger sod
• Additional strength during transport
However, there are trade-offs.
Because the mesh provides structural support, turf can often be harvested before roots have developed as extensively as they would in a mesh-free system.
This may result in:
• Shallower root development at harvest
• Longer establishment periods after installation
• More dependence on irrigation during establishment
• Synthetic material remaining in the soil
At Purple Springs Nursery & Turf, we choose to grow mesh-free turf because we believe strong roots are worth the extra time.
At Purple Springs Nursery & Turf, our turf stays in the field longer, allowing roots to develop naturally before harvest. The result is a lawn that can establish quickly, root deeply, and become part of your soil—not sit on top of a synthetic layer.
Good lawns aren't grown fast. They're grown right.https://psnursery.com/turf/
