Sybran Property Maintenance is celebrating 20 years in business today!

In the Fall of 2000, I was laid off from Hayes-Dana. In that Winter I did a few driveways of friends with a snow blower in the back of my truck.

I was lucky enough to get into the Self Employment Assistance (SEA) Program. In April 2001, I started a small lawn mowing business with a pickup, my parents’ lawnmower and a home-made trailer.

In the Spring of 2005, we hired our first employee and that Fall we bought the first plow for our pickup truck. In the Spring of 2006, we got our first few commercial properties for grass cutting which turned into commercial properties for snow removal. Over the next nine years we added more properties, more services, more equipment. We stayed reasonably small with one crew in the Summer and two employees plus me, two trucks and one tractor in the Winter.

Fast forward to 2015 we got a large Winter contract that changed the course of Sybran. Over the next six years we expanded our Winter service so that currently we have five tractors, six trucks and employ nine people.

After being asked by many customers we started offering gardening services, run by my lovely wife Amy. In 2014 this side of the business really took off. We now have a dedicated truck and crew of 2-3 employees.

I am still very much an Owner/Operator and very hands on. To date I still plow snow and cut grass everyday and I have built many important relationships over the years. I have always kept the small start up business in mind. I have some of the same customers from April 1st, 2001 until now.

One of the biggest things I have learned over the years is do what you say you are going to do and treat every customer as your most important customer.

Update from Sybran Property Maintenance

We hope that you are your family are well during these difficult times. We wanted to share with you that we have received word from Barrie by-law that our services including spring clean ups, lawn mowing and garden maintenance are considered essential.

We are implementing the following procedures:

-Each day we will be sanitizing the trucks.
-We will have one person per company vehicle and have additional employees drive their own vehicles to job sites individually.
-We will provide non surgical gloves and hand sanitizer in each company vehicle and in the shop.
-Gloves and equipment such as blowers, trimmers, mowers, hand tools will be labelled and only used by the same employee. These tools will also be sanitized daily.
-Employees will receive in writing the new rules and reminders will be up in the shop. In the shop and at all times all employees will respect the 6 foot rule.
-No employees will be allowed inside a customers home or place of business.
-Weather permitting we will be starting next week.

Important Message from Sybran Property Maintenance;

Saturday April 4th 2020

To our valued customers;

First and foremost, I hope you and your family are healthy and well in these uncertain times.
We are sending you this message to let you know that Sybran Property Maintenance is, at this point, not able to work for at least two weeks as directed by the Premier of Ontario. This decision has not been made lightly and all the factors below have gone into our decision;
• Virus numbers continue to rise exponentially and so are the deaths.
• We want to show solidarity with frontline health workers who put their lives at risk. They are asking everyone to simply stay home.
• The Premier announced alarming and startling projection numbers. It is necessary for everyone to take action. Otherwise we are facing thousands of deaths.
• Our profession will be under public scrutiny because we are so visible (especially in the spring).
• Landscape Ontario (who we are members of) is receiving negative feedback from the public about our industry’s regular work activities not being essential during a health crisis. Sybran and Landscape Ontario are interpreting the current essential list as not showing spring clean ups as essential.
• We have contacted the government directly for clarification about our services specifically and at this point we cannot get a direct answer.
• We want to protect our company from serious potential reputational and regulatory risks (fines, lack of insurance and WSIB coverage).
• The safety of our customers, employees and suppliers is our number one concern.
We are hoping that grass cutting may be deemed essential eventually and we will continue to follow the directions of the Government of Ontario and the advice of Landscape Ontario. As of right now spring clean ups and garden work is not on the essential services list.
We have close ties with Mayor Jeff Lehman and we will also follow his lead, when his crews are able to maintain City of Barrie properties we will also do so.

We are so sorry to disappoint you and we want you to know as soon as we are legally able to, and it is safe to do so we will be back to maintain your properties like we have been since 2001.
We are ready to work and we have already put into place new sanitation and social distancing rules for all of our employees. We are in a strong financial position and have made every effort to protect our business, we are not in danger of going out of business. We are also paying our full-time employees during this difficult time in order to protect them and their families.
We understand if you want to go with another company that may work through these times, however, we ask that you stick with us and when this is over we will all be stronger together. If we all do our part over the next few weeks we will help flatten the curve, speed the return to work for everyone and get our economy and all of our lives back to some type of normalcy.
