Hello friends 👋,

I hope that you are all well!

I want to start out by saying that I am sorry that it has been so long since I last posted on here. I thought that I would just take a quick moment to update you all and let you know that my family and I have just finished moving out of Caledon East up to our new home in Parry Sound! It has been a big transition, as I am sure you can all imagine, but I am very happy that my husband, 4 kiddos and I are all starting to feel settled in now after what has been a pretty crazy journey.🙂

The past several months have been a whirlwind to say the least. As many of you know, my daughter who has a very rare genetic disorder called Coffin Siris Syndrome, was scheduled to have spinal fusion surgery to try to correct her severe scoliosis this past July. This was the main reason why I initially took a break from taking orders/producing any new products. The surgery was suddenly cancelled just four days prior to surgery because there was an issue with the results from her pre-op testing on her heart. We had to wait until the end of October to finally be seen by the cardiology department at Sick Kids for some follow- up testing. Just a couple of weeks ago we were given the results of those tests. Unfortunately it has been confirmed that she has a large hole in her heart that needs to be repaired. This will obviously need to be addressed next year before we can even plan for the spinal fusion surgery to take place now.

My family and I casually began our hunt for a new home in the late spring of this year, but once we had received notice that the spinal surgery needed to be put on hold, we began to search more aggressively. We took many long family drives each weekend all over cottage country in attempt to find our next home close to the nature and water that we have all been craving. After starting to feel quite discouraged, we were suddenly lucky enough to be able to purchase our new home in late August but had just one month until the sellers needed to close. So here we are now- happy to have the dozens of house showings, weeks of packing, unpacking and everything else that goes along with quickly buying and selling a home behind us now.

I just want you all to know that I absolutely loved sharing my passion for plants with so many of you and I want to say a big THANK YOU for all of the amazing small business support! I have not forgotten about you and have been wanting to reach out for awhile now. Although I have had to put a pause on Botanical Trends for the past little while, I want you all to know that I have still been brainstorming ways to jump back into it again when the timing feels right. Until then, happy growing!🌱

💚 Cheryl

▶️IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! :

I want to let you all know that I will be needing to take some time off from Botanical Trends for quite a little while this summer. I have literally just been notified by Sick Kids hospital of a surgery date scheduled for my daughter to take place in just a few short weeks. She will be undergoing spinal fusion surgery to try to correct the "S" curve that has developed in her back over the years. Severe scoliosis is unfortunately a common problem for many people like my daughter, who happens to have an extremely rare genetic disorder called Coffin-Siris Syndrome. This is going to be a very major procedure and to be honest, I am SO nervous.
It is obvious that I now need to focus my energy on making the next few weeks leading up to surgery as enjoyable as possible for all of my kids. After all, tomorrow is the last day of school and the start of summer break.
Starting this week I really need to begin to prepare for the surgery. There are a few pre-op appointments to attend and of course once the big day arrives I will need to focus all of my energy on helping my sweet girl heal and taking care of my boys. I am fortunate that my husband will be taking time off work to stay by her side during the days in hospital and until she has several weeks of recovery behind her.

This is undoubtedly going to be a very challenging summer - not exactly what my family wants to deal with but we will just have to try to manage the best that we can. I had really hoped to become a vendor at a few outdoor markets so that I could get out and meet some of my awesome clients in person, but that plan will just not be possible this year. As hard as it is to have to pause things right now with my little plant business - I just have to do what is necessary for my family. I may pop on here and post every now and then, but I don't expect to have much time to invest into it like I have been. I hope to be able to come back stronger once my life settles into a more manageable routine and allows me the time to do what I am passionate about again.🌱
Thank you for your support and understanding during this difficult time!

Stay well,
Cheryl 💚

Two comments that I hear very frequently happen to be; "I don't have a green thumb", or "I don't have luck with plants."🌿
Here's the thing - I also have killed my fair share of plants over the years because just like humans, they are unfortunately not designed to live forever!

It is unnatural to keep a plant alive forever indoors in a relatively small pot when in nature they have their surrounding eco system to help support them.

The good news is that with each plant that doesn't make it, we can develop a better understanding of their specific needs!

As we already know, there are SO many benefits to having plants in our homes. Even if there is the risk that they will die (some much sooner than others), I still 100% believe that it is worth having them in our lives.🌿 It is the same for all good things in life - we must try to enjoy them while they are with us and of course try to learn from them. Luckily for us, there are so many species of plants available to choose from, meaning that there are plenty to try out. With a little patience and/or guidance, you will be able to find the plant match that works best for you and your space. Believe me, there are even some species like Sansevieria, Jade and ZZ Plants, that require barely any water and can live for many, many years! 💚

For today's SUNDAY FUN PLANT FACT I want to share the TOP 2 REASONS WHY HOUSEPLANTS DIE. For the most part, they are all situations that can be easily controlled as long as you try to learn the care needs for your specific species of plant. This is why I always offer basic care info with each plant purchase. 🙂 Feel free to reach out if you would like any houseplant info/tips and be sure to take a peek at the graphic posted to learn more. 🍃

First of all I want to wish a very Happy Father's Day to all of the amazing dads out there! I hope you enjoy your day. 💚

As promised, for today's SUNDAY FUN PLANT FACT I am continuing to share the benefits of watering your plants with rainwater.💧

Last week I already mentioned that rainwater actually contains more oxygen than tap water. Here are some more excellent reasons why you may want to start collecting rainwater to water your plants with:⬇️

1. Water from our taps usually has been treated with chemicals such as chlorine. Mostly all plants are susceptible to chlorine toxicity at some level, so using all natural rainwater helps to keep unwanted chemicals off of your plants.

2. The salt and minerals often found in tap water can build up on our plants and it's soil preventing it from absorbing water properly.

3. Rainwater is naturally a bit acidic which helps to cleanse away any build up that may have been deposited into the soil from tap water. Plus it also helps to release micronutrients such as zinc, magnesium, copper and iron that can become trapped in the soil. These nutrients are so beneficial for optimal health growth!🌿

4. The element nitrate can also be found in rainwater. It is actually responsible for helping plants look greener because without nitrates, the amount of chlorophyll in leaves reduces.

So, as you can see, collecting rainwater is not just about saving water - but also about stocking up on some high quality H20 to treat your plants to for FREE!!! 👍
Why not consider placing an extra container outside for harvesting some rainwater the next time that good stuff starts falling from the sky?🌦️😉
