Most lawn care advice online was not written for Alberta.

Calgary sits on clay-heavy soil with extreme freeze-thaw cycles, chinook winds, and one of the shortest growing seasons in North America. Generic tips from YouTube or U.S. garden blogs? They don’t apply here.

Here’s what Calgary lawns actually need in spring:
🔸 Core aeration — clay soil compacts hard over winter. Without it, water and nutrients can’t reach the roots. We recommend it every single year.
🔸 Overseed right after aeration; the holes give seeds direct soil contact. The most effective window to thicken your lawn.
🔸 Fertilizer NOT in April, wait until soil hits 10°C (usually late April/early May in Calgary). Too early and it’s wasted.
🔸 First mow at 3 inches, never lower for your first cut. Scalping weakens new growth right when it needs strength most.
