A very happy bit of news to share.

Our Canmore renovation has been named a finalist in the 2026 NKBA Western Canada Design Excellence Awards (Small Traditional Kitchen).

We’re so grateful for the recognition—and especially for our clients who trusted us to make a compact kitchen feel beautiful, functional, and right at home in their mountain retreat.

It’s a reminder that great design isn’t always about more space—it’s about making every inch work.

Which detail do you think makes a small kitchen feel bigger: lighting, layout, or storage? Tell us below.

White kitchens had a very good run.

But lately, warmth has entered the chat.

We’re seeing more homeowners drawn to kitchens with depth, texture, and personality — wood cabinetry, layered finishes, richer tones, and spaces that feel less “perfect” and more personal.

Not messy. Not overdone. Just warmer. Softer. More soulful.

The most timeless kitchens rarely feel brand new in the showroom sense.
They feel lived in, loved, and beautifully considered.

Honestly? We’re not mad about it.

Are you still loyal to white kitchens, or are you leaning warmer these days?

Interior decorator or interior designer - which one do you need?

There's absolutely a time and place for both, but when a renovation is involved, the difference matters.

A decorator focuses on the finishing layer.
A designer looks at the bigger picture.

That means layout, cabinetry, lighting, function, flow, and all the behind-the-scenes decisions that shape how your home actually works.

Because once construction enters the picture, decisions stop being purely aesthetic.

Move one thing, and three others are affected.

That’s why we guide our clients from the early planning stages right through to construction and final styling, so the result doesn’t just look right. It functions beautifully too.

We wrote a full article breaking it down further.

Your Lifestyle is the Design Thread

Before we ever select cabinetry, flooring, or furniture, we start with something much more important. Your life.

A successful home aesthetic always begins with lifestyle design. How you live determines how your home should feel.

✨ Do you love hosting large dinners?
✨Do you spend quiet evenings reading in the living room?
✨Are you transitioning into empty-nester life and redefining how your home works for you?

These answers guide the design.

Our role as professional interior designers is to identify the common thread that connects your home and build your interior composition around it.

That thread might be:

✨Warm, welcoming spaces designed for entertaining
✨Calm, retreat-like rooms for relaxation
✨Elegant spaces for hosting and gathering
✨A layered mix of antiques and modern pieces

Once that thread is defined, the home aesthetic begins to unfold naturally. Every decision supports the same story.

When it comes to renovating, not every line item deserves the same attention. These are the areas we recommend investing in:

1) Your everyday “touch points” (hardware + faucets + switches)

You don’t notice them… until they’re bad. A solid k**b, a faucet that turns like butter, switches that don’t feel like a 1997 hotel room — these are the micro-moments that add up to a home that feels polished and dependable.

2) Smart custom millwork

Pretty cabinetry is nice. Cabinetry that actually works is better. Deep drawers, hidden outlets, pantry organization, mudroom zones, custom vanities, built-ins that look like they’ve always belonged — this is where function and beauty co-mingle and make a difference.

3) The surfaces you live on (stone, quartz, and the details that make them feel high-end)

Countertops, backsplashes, shower surrounds — these are the visual anchor of the whole space. Natural stone has that “old world” soul, and today there are better options to protect it. Quartz can be wonderfully low-fuss when it’s selected thoughtfully (and paired with the right edge, slab, and backsplash move). The key is choosing what suits your lifestyle, not someone else’s Pinterest board.

At Room Service Interiors, we’re big on investments that age well — and that includes planning for the future with living-in-place design (because a beautiful home should also be easy to live in at 55, 65, and beyond).

Clients do not hire an interior designer because they are hoping for more decisions. They hire us because they are already drowning in them.

Anyone can lay out three options and ask, “Which one do you like best?” That is not guidance. That is a quiz.

Real design leadership sounds more like this:
~ Here is what fits the house.
~ Here is what supports the way you live.
~ Here is where it makes sense to spend.
~ Here is what may seem like a good idea now but will annoy you every single day.

Our job is not to overwhelm clients with endless choice and call that collaboration. It is to edit. To translate. To see around corners. To protect the vision and the investment at the same time.

Because the process should not feel like a scavenger hunt with tile samples.
It should feel considered, steady, and well led.
