All the different bees my Common Tall Sunflower ( Helianthus nutallii ) hosts even on this blustery day. The small bees and then one of the bumbles were nestled in the blooms while the wind battered the stalks about. Very cute. I love native bees. :)

Philadelphia Fleabane is a native wildflower that plays a big role in our local ecosystems. It blooms from late spring into early summer with daisy-like flowers that are a pale pink in color. The flowers provide an important nectar and pollen source for many pollinators who are creating nests and raising their first set of young during this time. Additionally, fleabanes bridge seasonal gaps of nectar, blooming earlier then many of our summer wildflowers, which ensures a reliable food source throughout the season for pollinators.

Philly fleabane attracts many species of native bees which include small sweat bees, mining bees, and leafcutter bees. It also attracts other beneficial insects such as flower flies, beetles and butterflies. The shallow flower structure is helpful for the super small native bees we have and other short tongued pollinators that get lost in other species we may plant for butterflies and bumblebees, both of which have long tongues and can utilize deeper, more complexly formed flowers.

A short lived perennial, Erigeron thrives in full sun and can tolerate partial shade, although larger blooms and more robust plants are traits found in plants that grow in full sun conditions. However, this is a species that is often found in somewhat moist conditions, growing frequently on the edges of wetlands or in moist meadows. Be sure to water the first year and perhaps, during long droughts also provide supplemental watering. It self seeds readily, and for the first year forms a rosette that's close to the ground, so don't w**d it out!

Yarrow // Achillea borealis

Popular with insects and people alike, Yarrow is a beautiful hardy perennial with fern-like foilage that can be used as a lawn replacement or grown as a native wildflower in your garden. Once established it is drought tolerant but requires watering the first year. It spreads by rhizome and seed but is not aggressive like the European species Achillea millefolium or the common yarrow and cultivars that are sold in garden centers.

It has clusters of creamy white flowers that bloom all summer long, which provides a steady source of nectar and pollen for many different pollinators and beneficial insects. Not only is it beloved by a number of native bees species, this shallow flower also attracts beetles, parasitoid wasps, flower flies and butterflies, making it a great choice in supporting our local biodiversity. It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, although the plants may become leggy.

Yarrow is widely used in medicinal applications and common uses include tea for menstruation support, a mashed poultice to stop bleeding, dried to be used as a stypic powder, or use of the flower heads to make an infused oil.

Wild bee balm / Monarda fistula

This plant is a herbaceous perennial that spreads through creeping rhizomes, and is suggested to be divided every 2-3 years to keep it neat and tidy in your garden. Otherwise, it is perfect for a naturalized or meadow planting and looks stunning mixed with prairie sage, prairie cinquefoil and harebells.

By planting Bee Balm, you are directly supporting our local foodweb by attracting beneficial insects such as bumblebees, solitary bees, moths and butterflies. Tubular shaped flowers indicate that hummingbirds visit it as well as other long-tongued pollinators.

Not only a strong supporter for our local ecosystems, Bee balm can be used medicinally and in teas. It has extensive use for colds, coughs and the flu.

It is a midsummer bloomer, blooming through to the fall to provide a late nectar and pollen source.

A hardy yet delicate perennial, Harebell is a staple across Alberta and is found in many habitats and soil types. It is drought tolerant once established and has a clumping habit. It does not spread aggressively and is a fantastic choice for a pop of color in your garden.

Ecologically, Campanula alaskana is a very important pollinator plant - hosting harebell specific solitary bees. These bees can only feed their larvae pollen from Harebell species, and having several in your garden is sure to attract them among many generalist species such as bumblebees and butterflies.

This plant can take full sun and part shade, being found in both prairies and open woods. It has a long bloom time, stretching from mid summer to fall, providing crucial nectar and pollen resources to beneficial insects when less is available.

Hairy false golden aster/Heterotheca villosa is another critical species for pollinators, with a long bloom time stretching from mid summer to fall. It grows 6-12 inches tall and commonly sprawls across the ground. It is not an aggressive spreader but will self seed if given bare ground around the mother plant. This plant loves full sun and tolerates a variety of soil, and can be grown in everything from rich garden soil to rocky and sandy terrain. Heterotheca villosa is also drought tolerant once established, though will bloom longer and more vigorously with supplemental watering during long hot, dry spells.

A study in Montana unveiled a high diversity of bee species visiting plants on dedicated farms, with the species as follows: Bumble bees, medium and small mining bees, green sweat bees, banded sweat bees, small dark sweat bees, small carpenter bees, cellophane bees, wool-carder bees, resin bees, mason bees, leafcutting bees, masked bees, long-horned bees, and cuckoo bees all recorded visiting.

Butterflies and flower flies also visit this plant, making it a well rounded addition to your pollinator garden.

Common tall sunflower/ Helianthus nuttallii is coming into bloom now! I still have a few plants left for sale. 8$ each.

These are good for a larger garden or naturalized planting, and are very attractive to many different species of bees. I have a photo somewhere of a sweat bee covered in pollen sleeping in one of the blooms at night, it's so sweet.

Did you know Helianthus is a keystone genus? This means all native Helianthus host and support different pollinators, which results in some nibbling of the vegetation by different organisms. This is a good thing, however, as the caterpillars that host on Helianthus nuttallii will morph into moths or butterflies, which in turn feed birds and support our food web!

So not only does it support various bee species, large and small, it also can host up to 50-60 different types of caterpillars. Then, once the flower heads have gone to seed, they feed birds! This plant is a win for our local ecosystems, I encourage you to give her a try. :)
