Borage (Borago officinalis) is an edible flower! 🌿💙 Its bright blue, star-shaped blossoms are not only beautiful but also have a mild, cucumber-like flavor.

How to Use Borage:
🌸 In Salads – Toss the flowers into leafy greens for a pop of color and fresh taste.
🍹 In Drinks – Freeze them in ice cubes or float them in cocktails and lemonades.
🫖 In Teas – Brew the leaves and flowers for a mild, herbal tea.
🍰 As a Garnish – Perfect for decorating cakes, desserts, and cheese boards.

Bonus: Borage is also a pollinator magnet, attracting bees and beneficial insects to your garden! 🐝💙

If you’re not growing sage, you’re missing out! This hardy, fragrant herb is easy to grow and adds a rich, earthy flavor to so many dishes. It thrives in garden beds or pots, making it perfect for any space!

One of my favorite ways to use sage? Sage Butter! 🧈✨ It’s simple, delicious, and takes any dish to the next level.

½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
6-8 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped
1 clove garlic (optional), minced
Pinch of salt

🌿 Welcome to Garden and Garnish! 🌿

How many more weeks until spring? ❄️🌱 It’s been a long, cold winter here in Nova Scotia, endless snow and ice. But winter gardening? That’s all about cozying up by the fire with seed catalogs and dreaming of sun-soaked days in the garden.

This year, I’m incredibly excited to expand my herb garden. A few sprigs of fresh herbs can transform a meal—like a handful of mint or basil in a pineapple smoothie. 🍍🌿You can add small (or large) pots of herbs on your window or patio, or counter to enhance almost every meal or beverage!

✨ Herbs I’m loving right now:
🌱 Parsley – Flat leaf or curly, it’s easy to grow, and the more you cut, the better it thrives. Add it to a smoothie for a peppery boost.
🌱 Lemongrass – Slow to start, but by late summer, it’s perfect for Thai soups (plus, toss some in your rain barrel to keep bugs away!).
🌱 Purple Basil - A beautiful plant with a mild licorice taste.
🌱 Calendula - New to me this year. The seedlings are doing well and they have so many uses.

Right now, on my dining room table, seedlings of herbs and flowers are waiting for the warmth of spring—destined for teas, garnishes, and garden-fresh inspiration.

Thanks for following! I’ll be sharing gardening tips, recipes, and ideas for culinary herbs and edible flowers—simple ways to bring more homegrown goodness to your kitchen. No matter the size of your garden, there’s always room to grow! 🌿💚 Nikki

There are many different types of thyme. (Wild, English, Lemon, Orange, and Winter Thyme) You probably have some creeping thyme in your garden. It makes an excellent ground cover and gives a subtle boost to your cooking.

Did you know you can easily infuse thyme in oil for an extra burst of flavor in your cooking? It’s simple, fragrant, and adds a beautiful touch to your dishes! Here’s how:

🌿Choose your oil – Olive oil works great, but feel free to experiment with others!
🌿Prep your thyme – Wash and dry fresh thyme sprigs to avoid excess moisture.
🌿Warm the oil – Gently heat it in a saucepan over low heat (don’t let it get too hot!).
🌿Add the thyme – Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, releasing all that delicious herbal goodness.
🌿Cool & strain – Once it cools, strain out the thyme, and store the oil in a clean jar.
✨ Pro tip: Try infusing garlic or other herbs like rosemary for a tasty twist! 🌿

Use your thyme-infused oil in salads, drizzled over roasted veggies, or (my fav!) as a dip for fresh bread! 😋

Yes, chives are considered a herb! 🌿 They belong to the onion family and are known for their mild, onion-like flavor.

Chives are versatile and add an oniony zing to eggs, soups, salads, and sauces. They’re also easy to grow and can thrive in a small garden or a pot on your windowsill for year-round use!

Chives plants can be easily split and dug up so you can share them with friends and neighbours.
