Running out of hot water before everyone gets their turn?

Before you start shopping for a bigger water heater, there might be another reason your hot water isn’t keeping up.

A few things can cause this:
• Sediment buildup can collect in the tank over time.
• A heating component may have failed, so the water isn’t heating properly.
• A dip tube problem can affect how hot and cold water move through the tank.
• The tank may simply be getting old.

And if you’re noticing discoloured water or a leak, that’s not your water heater asking for a little more attention. It’s time to get it checked.

The good news? Running out of hot water doesn’t automatically mean you need a bigger tank.

Sometimes it just needs a little attention.

Before you replace it, let’s figure out what’s actually going on.

Before you cover your AC for the winter, make sure you’re actually protecting it, not creating a new problem.

I recommend protecting the top of the unit from falling leaves, branches, ice and snow.

A simple piece of plywood with something heavy enough to keep it in place can do the trick. Then remove it in the spring before turning your AC back on.

Simple, inexpensive, and one less thing to worry about when AC season rolls around again.

A Second Opinion Could Save You Thousands

If someone tells you that your furnace needs to be replaced, you don't necessarily have to say yes right away.

Sometimes the problem can be repaired and the furnace can keep running for years. Other times, replacement really is the better option.

The important thing is knowing what's actually wrong, what your options are, and what makes the most sense for your home before spending thousands on a new furnace.

That's why a second opinion can be worth it.

Short answer: maybe.

Duct cleaning isn’t something every home needs just because a certain number of years have passed. Your ducts don’t come with an expiry date.

There are a few situations where it can make sense:

- You’ve done renovations - drywall dust, sawdust, and other debris can end up in the ductwork.
- You can actually see a lot of dirt or debris inside the ducts.
- You’ve had pests in or around the ductwork.
- You’re dealing with ongoing debris or contamination that doesn’t seem to be going away.

But if you’re dealing with poor airflow, unusual smells, or excessive dust, duct cleaning may not be the answer.

Sometimes the problem is somewhere else, and cleaning the ducts is just an expensive way of cleaning the wrong thing.

Plains Contracting doesn’t does NOT do duct cleaning but we can refer you to a reputable company that does.

Going Away? Don’t Forget to Check Your Smart Thermostat.

Heading out on vacation? Before you leave, take a minute to review your Smart Thermostat settings.

If you use Eco Temperatures, your thermostat can adjust your home’s temperature while you’re away instead of maintaining your usual comfort settings.

It’s a great function if used correctly, but many homeowners don’t realize it’s turned on until something happens.

I’ve had clients come home from a winter vacation to a 10 degree Celsius home after moving to a new house. They hadn’t checked these settings and it was a chilly surprise to come home to.

Before you head out, check that your Eco Temperatures are set appropriately for the season, or turn this setting off.

A quick check before you leave can help prevent coming home to a house that’s much hotter or colder than expected, or worst case with burst pipes in the winter.
