A quick flooring tip that could save you thousands of dollars down the road.
Not all wood floors are created equal.
Recently, we have seen several engineered hardwood floors where the wear layer was so thin that refinishing was not an option. The homeowners were understandably disappointed because the floor looked like wood, but there simply was not enough material left to sand and restore.
If you are considering engineered hardwood, ask about the wear layer. As a general rule, we recommend looking for at least a 3 mm to 4 mm wear layer if you want a reasonable chance of refinishing the floor in the future.
With solid hardwood, this is rarely a concern. Solid hardwood can typically be refinished multiple times over its lifetime, which is one of the reasons it continues to be such a strong long term investment.
Before you buy flooring, ask one simple question:
"Can this floor be refinished, and how many times?"
Future you will be glad you did.
