If a pipe bursts, a gas leak occurs or an electrical fault sparks an emergency in your home, would you know exactly what to do in the first 60 seconds?

Most homeowners don't.

This article highlights one of the simplest yet most overlooked aspects of home preparedness: knowing the location of your electrical panel, main water shut-off valve and gas shut-off valve before an emergency happens.

A few minutes spent identifying and labelling these critical shut-offs today could prevent thousands of dollars in damage tomorrow—and more importantly, help keep your family safe.

It's a reminder that resilience isn't always about major renovations or expensive upgrades. Sometimes it's about understanding the systems that keep our homes running and being prepared when something goes wrong.

Homeowners: Have you ever had to shut off your home's water, gas or electricity during an emergency? What happened, and what did you learn from the experience?

For years, homeowners, builders, and designers have been told that south-facing windows are the gold standard for energy-efficient homes.

But what if they're also creating one of the most overlooked problems in residential design?

This article explores the hidden trade-offs of south-facing windows. While they can provide valuable passive solar heating and reduce winter energy consumption, they can also lead to overheating, glare, increased cooling costs and occupant discomfort if not designed correctly.

The key takeaway? Sustainable building isn't about maximizing a single feature—it's about balancing the entire system. Window placement, shading strategies, glazing specifications, thermal mass and landscaping all play a role in whether south-facing windows become an asset or a liability.

As building performance standards continue to evolve, it's a reminder that "more sunlight" doesn't automatically mean "better design."

We're curious:

Have you experienced overheating issues caused by large south-facing windows in a home or building? What solutions worked best?

One of Canada's fastest-growing careers isn't in tech—it's in HVAC.

As Canada accelerates towards net-zero buildings, electrification and large-scale energy retrofits, HVAC technicians are becoming some of the most important professionals in the green economy.

Today's HVAC professionals do far more than install heating and cooling equipment. They're working with advanced heat pumps, smart building automation systems, energy recovery ventilation and other technologies that are helping reduce emissions while improving building performance.

The industry is also facing a significant labour shortage at a time when demand for skilled technicians continues to rise, creating strong opportunities for those considering a career in the trades.

What stands out most is how this profession sits at the intersection of technology, sustainability and hands-on problem solving. As buildings become smarter and more energy efficient, the role of HVAC technicians is evolving into a critical part of Canada's climate and energy future.

Would you encourage more young people to consider skilled trades careers like HVAC? Why or why not?

Is Canada’s forestry crisis really about U.S. tariffs?

A growing body of evidence suggests the answer is no.

While tariffs have certainly added pressure, the deeper challenges facing Canada's forestry sector are structural: shrinking fibre supply, regulatory complexity, declining competitiveness, underinvestment in innovation and insufficient domestic demand for wood products.

The consequences are already being felt. Mill closures, job losses and reduced production capacity are impacting communities across the country. At the same time, Canada is facing a housing shortage and a growing need for sustainable, low-carbon building materials.

The forestry sector has long been a cornerstone of Canada's economy. The question now is whether this moment becomes a turning point for transformation—or a continued decline of one of our most important industries.

What do you think is the single most important change needed to secure the future of Canadian forestry?

The global construction industry is making progress—but not fast enough.

A new UNEP report warns that buildings and construction still account for roughly 37 percent of global CO₂ emissions, and current decarbonization efforts are falling short of net-zero targets. At the same time, demand for new buildings continues to surge worldwide.

The report highlights a critical question for our industry: How do we accelerate sustainable construction while meeting growing housing and infrastructure needs?

This article breaks down the key findings, challenges and opportunities shaping the future of the built environment.
