Sure, they give privacy.

They also: ❌ Block sunlight ❌ Create dry soil underneath ❌ Crowd out other plants ❌ Make grass struggle nearby.

Privacy is great.

But sometimes you're creating a giant green wall that makes the rest of your yard harder to enjoy.

People plant them 18 inches apart.

Then they're shocked when they compete for water, turn brown, get thin at the bottom, and start dying.

The problem usually isn't the cedar.

It's where and how it was planted.

Every second yard in Côte-Saint-Luc, NDG, Hampstead and Montreal West has the exact same privacy hedge.

Cedars. Cedars. More cedars.

Meanwhile there are hundreds of beautiful shrubs, flowering trees, ornamental grasses and native plants that provide more colour, more seasonal interest and more wildlife value.

Your yard doesn't have to look like everybody else's.

Stop planting cedars everywhere.

Cedars are the landscaping equivalent of buying a puppy because it's cute.

Everyone loves them when they're 4 feet tall.

Nobody loves them when they're 18 feet tall and need trimming three times a year.

Planting a row of cedars is easy.

Paying someone to maintain them for the next 20 years is the expensive part.

🌱 NOUVEAU GAZON?

🌱 NEW LAWN? SAVE THIS.

The #1 reason new lawns fail isn't bad seed.

It's inconsistent watering.

If you've recently overseeded, top-dressed, or installed new sod, this guide could save you hundreds of dollars and weeks of frustration.

Feel free to save it, share it, or send it to that neighbour who keeps asking why their new grass isn't growing. 😄

🌿 Customer service isn't measured when things are convenient.

This morning, one of our clients texted to say he'd just picked up all the flowers for his property and asked if there was any chance we could get them planted soon.

By 5:00 PM, Alejandra was on site.

She spent the evening planting flowers, weeding, and making sure everything was done properly, finishing around 8:00 PM.

A few hours later, this was the message I received:

"Alejandra was AWESOME 👌🌹🙏👍"

That's what happens when you have team members who genuinely care about the customer experience.

The flowers could have waited.

The weeds could have waited.

The easy answer could have been, "We'll get to it next week."

Instead, Alejandra made the trip, got it done, and left behind a happy client.

I'm incredibly proud of the work she does and the care she brings to every property she visits.

Great job, Alejandra. 🌱

🌿 Little messages like this mean a lot.

This morning, our seasonal maintenance team visited one of our clients, and a few minutes later I received this text:

"Domenico and Nick were just here. Luv 'em ❤️"

That's it.

No long review. No fancy testimonial.

Just a happy client taking a moment out of their day to tell us we got it right.

I'm proud of the work we do, but I'm even more proud of the people who represent Beau Jardin every day. Reliability, kindness, attention to detail, and treating every property with care—that's what makes the difference.

Great job, Dom and Nick. 🌱

🌱 How Beau Jardin Started...

By accident.

Or maybe not.

Back in 2020, when COVID hit, the company I worked for sent most of us home.

For the first few months, it was great.

No commute. No traffic. More family time.

But after a while, I started feeling trapped indoors.

I needed fresh air. I needed sunshine. I needed something to do with my hands.

So one day, while scrolling Facebook Marketplace, I saw a used lawnmower for sale.

Price?

$25.

I bought it for absolutely no good reason other than it looked like a fun toy to play with. 😄

There was just one problem.

It started...

But it wouldn't stay running.

That little lawnmower led me to Kevin Mack from Mack's Repair.

Kevin helped me figure it out, and before long, one gardening project turned into another.

Then another.

Then another.

What started as a hobby became a passion.

What started as a $25 lawnmower became garden beds, flowers, pruning, lawn renovations, retaining walls, and eventually...

Beau Jardin.

Four years later, I still laugh when I think about it.

Sometimes life changes because of a big plan.

Sometimes it starts with a broken lawnmower on Facebook Marketplace.

And for the record...

That $25 lawnmower was probably the best investment I've ever made. 🌿

How did you end up in the career or hobby you love today?

Was it planned... or did life surprise you?

— Gal the Gardener

P.S. The tiny version of me in this photo is probably about the same size as my business was when I bought that lawnmower. 😆🌱
