Done. They are in. They are gorgeous.
My nerves are no longer fried.
Now I need to seal them, before life gets too far ahead of me. (These were installed a week ago from the day I posted this, and I still haven’t had a chance to seal the counters…yeesh)
Because they are a natural stone, the sealing is an important step, but these counters are still pretty darn resistant to life in general (we always use cutting boards, even when we had sh*tty laminate counters, so less chance of acidity from food contact etching the stone, but we will seal them, especially around the coffee area)
I am excited to have them in, and they are as beautiful as I dreamt they would be. This choice was an anxiety inducer, but I am so very happy I made it.
The number of clients that reached out to me after I posted about this slab when it was still a twinkle in my eye, reminding me of the advice I have given all of them, to listen to the pitter patter when your heart tells you something is right for you. Thank you for pushing me, and reminding me to trust my gut. Being a designer and designing my own home has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster, and I am grateful to all who have reached out to encourage me! Xoxoxo

I don’t think I have been more nervous to see counters installed.
I’ve done this hundreds of times for clients over the years.
I am the one reassuring them, knowing what the end result will be, and how fabulous the choice is for them.
But for me?? I needed someone holding my hand, my nerves were on edge that morning, knowing my long considered choice was finally arriving in my house.
I ended up with the slab I visited about a half dozen times, the Calacatta Matarazzo quartzite. And it’s exactly what I envisioned.
Nerves are now calm. I am a happy puppy.

I filmed this last week, haven’t had a chance to post…life…yeesh.
Counters were installed last week, this was just before the arrived. Next up, the counters are in!!!

Renovations go through phases. This is a particularly boring phase, because we are in limbo as we wait for the counters. Which means washing dishes in the bathroom sink, which isn’t all that awful, it’s just a small sink. We have water in the fridge, so easy to fill coffee machines and a pot of water for cooking, so the last 3 weeks has been just a new little routine as we adjust to this new kitchen!
We also had the wall to wall carpet installed during construction holiday, which has been Lilly’s favourite part of this whole process! She loves going up and down the stairs now, and will happily roll around on the carpet while she gets tummy rubs. She is a happy dog.
A few more updates for you over the next couple of weeks, but we are in the home stretch!

There is a trend on Reels with “I’m the designer, and I wanted blah blah blah” and then the contractor responding with how hard that was, and getting cut off before the sentence ends. Like the tradesperson is irrelevant when the designer wants something. Harumph. Can we just fu***ng normalize the amazing teamwork between a contractor or tradesperson and the designer vision? I don’t love those reels because the contractor always gets cut off, like their opinion is less important than the designer. If it’s achievable, a good contractor/designer team will always figure out a solution. And not every idea is a good one!
One thing about this request, for context, I asked Joe to do this on the very last day he was working on my house, before he left for a four week epic vacation. And he did it. With a huge smile on. There was no sconce and no panelling for this wall the day before. And he was happy to do this for me!

Lilly loves that we now have wall to wall carpet upstairs. Every time one of us comes up, she is right behind us, and often just stays upstairs, rolling around on the carpet.
This dog has done some reverse aging through this entire process.

A friend told me years ago about the spiritual significance of finding random dimes. That someone who has passed is with you.
Believe what you want, but it was comforting to find THREE dimes as I was pulling out old phone lines, as Dad had worked for Bell for decades. Hi dad.

Just when we felt the worst was over with the kitchen and main floor upheaval, we moved up to the bedrooms. The contractor finishes tomorrow (Thursday) and is leaving for a well deserved vacation, but the carpets get installed Friday/Monday, so we have spent the last few days playing a game of Tetris with the furniture upstairs, emptying one room into the next so it can be painted, quarter rounds removed, etc, all with the goal of having my office and our principal bedroom completely empty for what was supposed to be Friday’s carpet install. Then we got the call that Friday isn’t happening, as the carpet didn’t arrive yet, so we are going to try to tackle the three bedrooms, the hall AND the stairs on Monday! Yes, we are nuts. The idea is do two rooms, and while they tackle the stairs, we slide all the furniture out of the tiny bedroom before they finish the stairs, and they then do the tiny bedroom. Then we keel over from exhaustion.
Home stretch, with only a few little last minute details that will likely have to wait until Joe gets back.
If you need a PHENOMENAL contractor, you gotta hire this guy! He is a machine. And I have worked with him for years, and am always impressed by his workmanship, his skill level, and his patience. DM me for info!!

If we hadn’t been doing such an upheaval in this renovation, we may have considered painting the interior of the closets. But when you live in a small house, and space is already at a premium, the thought of EMPTYING the closets to slap a fresh coat of paint on their insides gave me heart palpitations. To heck with that.

When I plan a kitchen, I consider the habits of the users. Planning my own kitchen, I used the same logic. I plan what “stuff” will go in each cabinet, each drawer, each pull-out. I consider how many prep zones you may need, whether or not the client needs an entertaining space (or an eat-in or barstool space) Not everyone needs an island. Not every kitchen can handle an island. (You need a lot of space for that)
When I had planned the kitchen in SketchUp, I started labelling every drawer and cabinet, deciding what would go where, and realized I had some issues with where garbage and recycling would go, as well as our dog food!
Despite doing this exercise, we spend the first few days cooking minimally in the new kitchen, and decided to focus on how we were naturally moving through this new layout. After a few days, we realized a few of the layout choices in what should go where needed some subtle tweaking/negotiating.
We’ve now been cooking in this kitchen since July 14, (despite no counters yet), and have already appreciated all the details that went into the space planning.
And after loading the space completely, we realized we still had an entire upper cabinet completely unused! (Which is now a “bread cabinet” because why not)
Cabinet colour is Benjamin Moore Jojoba. K***s and pulls are all Amerock, ordered off “that” place on-line. Wall sconces are Hudson Valley Lighting, dishes are from Stokes. Cutlery is actually the “good” silverware from my husband’s first marriage (when the heck else will you use the good cutlery!? Use the damn good silver every day!!)
