One of the worst piped heating jobs, only a few years old and the electric boiler was dying, the propane gas boiler was dead and the way it was piped, just terrible.
Switched to a from ... I know bi-energy is all the rage but sometimes, you need to provide simplicity. One tank that heats the water to 180F. Right side has mixed output of 105F for the floor heating, left side is mixed to 140F for the cast iron rads and this does tankless hotwater as well. It's a hard transition telling clients to run their hot water at 115F.. so its mixed back up to the 140F they're used to, sigh, but yes, the only thing I hate about these are the weight! 430 Ibs (195kg).

Another boiler replacement.

Would have liked to put the pump on the supply but the feed was still connected before the pump so we're all good! The previous installation, circa 1990 was actually a decent one. We don't see that to often.

That would have been a sad day for cast iron radiators as well 😪

The radiator is often overlooked in the decor of a building but they certainly add an element of style to any building.

The Halifax explosion of 1917 was really impressive in the level of explosion and damage caused.. well worth revisiting this part of history. It's easier to look back at disasters in awe after some time has passed.

My client showed me an invoice from a few days ago about a plumber bringing connections for a washing machine up one floor.... 12 feet of pipe, a few fittings, connected from the service sink in the basement going straight up to the next floor. It was done with the cheapest cellcore abs...

I couldn't believe the price! I'm all for trades getting paid... but this is abuse. I went to estimate replacing a cast iron radiator in his garage, and he asked me, "Do you think it'll be less than 10k?" ... this started the conversation, and now I'll have a client for life.

We try to stay honest in our pricing and our profit without going too much into justifying our prices because a lot of time can be wasted. For jobs lasting less than a day, we usually do a time + materials. For bigger projects, we do fixed prices.

All that to say is do you homework! If you have a few estimates, and they're all close in range, choose the one that feels right, but get several estimates. Nowadays, estimates can be done easily and quickly by text/email. Certainly a ballpark figure can be provided for a simple job such as these.

Ripped out the old, giant cast iron boiler and oil tank. Installed new electric boiler. Making these boilers shiny is key. Clients love the stainless steel look.. beyond that, as long as it heats, they care about nothing else!

Here's a breakdown of a job:

The client wanted his oil fired boiler replaced and his oil tank removed. For transparency: this particular job has a new 18KW BTH ultra boiler and close boiler piping. Removal of old cast boiler, pumping out oil and removing and disposal of tank and debris.

5400$+taxes total. Panel was big enough, suspended ceiling, and 30' away. The electrical portion was 1000$+tax.

Lots of factors will vary when we price these jobs out, but I see way too many of them being done, overpriced, and done terribly.

It's not a terrible installation, but certainly a quick one done by a company that doesn't service their own installations... this is 2 years old.

Have your installations done by companies that ALSO do service. I have a tendency to always plan for the inevitable service of all components within a system. A little more $ on the install, but a lot less $$ in the future.

New truck wrap coming in next week. Anyone with radiators and pets will know immediately. And if they don't have those, the cute kitty might grab their attention all the same. Nit that I need to advertise but I'll take standing out a little but from the rest.
